Dragon Ball: How Old Is Goku in Every Arc?

Goku is about 12 at the start of Dragon Ball, around 18 when Raditz arrives, and roughly 31–32 in the Buu period. Here’s how those estimates fit the timeline.

By the commonly used Dragon Ball timeline, Goku is about 12 when the original series begins, about 18 when Raditz arrives, roughly 24 during the Cell conflict, and around 31–32 in the Buu period. These are approximate chronological ages, not official age declarations for every arc. They come from subtracting in-universe calendar years, and can differ from how old Goku looks or how many years he has been alive.

How Goku’s age is calculated

Dragon Ball uses an in-universe calendar marked “Age.” The conventional timeline places Goku’s birth in Age 737 and the opening of the original adventure in Age 749, giving an age of about 12 by simple year subtraction. A specialist timeline reference notes conflicts among dates in guidebooks and later timeline material, so this is a widely used convention rather than an uncontested official age table. Kanzenshuu’s Dragon World Timeline

The figures below track chronological age in the main conventional timeline. They are estimates, not birthday-precise answers: the available official chronology records release history rather than Goku’s in-universe age, and official series descriptions and recaps do not provide a complete arc-by-arc age chart. Story point Conventional placement Approximate chronological age
Original Dragon Ball opening / Pilaf-era adventure Age 749 About 12
21st Tenkaichi Budokai Around Age 750 About 13
Later original Dragon Ball / Piccolo-era events Mid-750s Mid-to-late teens; exact age is uncertain
Raditz and Saiyan arrival Around Age 761 About 18
Namek and Frieza conflict Around Ages 762–763 About 19–20
Android and Cell conflict Around Age 767 About 24–25, depending on how time in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber is counted
Majin Buu conflict Around Age 774 About 31–32 chronologically
Dragon Ball Super arcs After Buu’s defeat and before the later End of Z events Roughly early-to-mid 30s; official recaps do not give numerical ages
DAIMA After the Buu-era events in the franchise presentation No precise number established; Goku’s body is made small
GT Later sequel setting, in a separate continuity Adult chronologically; Goku is turned into a child

Goku’s age through the original Dragon Ball and Z

Original Dragon Ball: about 12 at the beginning

The familiar calculation starts with Goku’s birth in Age 737 and the first adventure in Age 749. At the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, the timeline reaches about Age 750, making him roughly 13 by the same method. Later original-series events fall in the mid-750s, but the dates and birthday uncertainty make a single exact age for the Piccolo-era story misleading.

Raditz, Saiyan, Namek, and Frieza: about 18 to 20

Raditz’s arrival is conventionally placed around Age 761, which puts Goku at about 18 by calendar-year subtraction. The Namek and Frieza conflict is placed around Ages 762–763, corresponding to roughly 19–20. Those figures describe chronological age; they should not be adjusted downward simply because Goku dies during the story.

Androids and Cell: about 24 to 25

The Android and Cell events are conventionally placed around Age 767, or approximately 24–25. Goku also trains in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where subjective training time and time passing outside the chamber are not the same. The estimate is therefore best treated as a timeline age, not a claim that every character experiences the same elapsed time.

Majin Buu: about 31 to 32 chronologically

The Buu events are conventionally placed around Age 774, yielding an approximate chronological age of 31–32. Toei’s Dragon Ball Kai description identifies the seven-year interval between the Cell and Buu periods, supporting the broad timeline sequence. Goku has been dead for part of the intervening story, so “years alive” is a different measure from chronological age.

How old is Goku in Dragon Ball Super?

Super takes place after Majin Buu’s defeat and before the later End of Z events. The official recap presents the Beerus, Universe 6, Future Trunks, and Universe Survival arcs, but does not assign Goku a numerical age. Toei’s series descriptions and the official Super story recap establish story order, not an exact age table. Under the conventional calendar estimate, Goku is in his early-to-mid 30s across Super, with the precise figure depending on the arc date and timeline convention.

DAIMA and GT: small appearance does not mean young age

DAIMA

The official DAIMA synopsis says Goku and his companions “suddenly turned small due to a conspiracy.” That premise changes their appearance, not their birth dates. The series presentation places DAIMA after the Buu-era events, but the official synopsis does not provide a numerical age for Goku. Dragon Ball DAIMA Official Site

GT

GT belongs to a separate sequel continuity. Toei’s series description says that another set of Dragon Balls turns Goku back into a child; it does not make him chronologically a child again. Treat his age in GT as adult chronologically, while distinguishing that from his child-sized body. Toei Animation: Dragon Ball series descriptions

Which “age” do you mean?

  • Chronological age: years counted on the in-universe calendar since birth. This is the basis for the estimates in the table.
  • Years alive: time Goku has been living rather than dead. Because he dies and spends time away from earthly life, this can be lower than chronological age.
  • Apparent age: how old his body looks. Transformations in GT and DAIMA alter his size or appearance without changing his birth date.

Anime-only material, films, and supplementary timeline sources can use different placements or continuity assumptions. The official series chronology is a record of publication and release dates, not an in-universe calendar, so broadcast years should not be used to calculate Goku’s age.
