The contrast is sharpest at the Cell Games, where Goku chooses him as the fighter who can defeat Cell and Cell deliberately attacks his friends to force that power out. But the pattern begins much earlier, and it is not identical in every arc: Piccolo’s harsh preparation for an invasion grows into a bond, while the Buu-era accounts show Gohan stepping into a defender’s role without establishing that he resists it. The official character profile gives the tension a personal counterpoint: Gohan is a polite boy who dreams of becoming a scholar.
What “treated like a weapon” means in Gohan’s story
This is an interpretive lens, not a label used by official Dragon Ball sources. It fits moments when someone directs Gohan toward combat because of what his strength can accomplish, while his age, wishes, or emotional cost become secondary. The distinction matters: a child being prepared for an invasion, a father making a tactical choice, and an enemy exploiting a boy’s attachments are not the same kind of pressure.
Gohan is not simply passive in these stories. He sometimes freezes or refuses, but he also makes choices to fight and protect others. The question is not whether he ever shows courage; it is who places the burden on him, what he wants, and what the burden costs.
The Saiyan invasion: a four-year-old prepared for war
Gohan is four when Raditz kidnaps him. After Goku dies stopping Raditz, Piccolo takes the boy away to train for the coming arrival of Vegeta and Nappa. The official character profile describes six months of survival in the wilderness. For a very young child, this is preparation imposed by an adult conflict: Gohan is being made useful against an invasion he did not choose.

The training does not make him instantly fearless. During the confrontation with Nappa, Gohan freezes in fear. Piccolo dies protecting him, and Gohan later fights again and chooses to go to Goku’s rescue against Vegeta. That choice is important: his role begins as an adult’s plan, but it does not erase his agency as the danger unfolds.
Nor does Piccolo remain only the hard taskmaster who trained him for battle. The official profile later describes Gohan fighting beside Piccolo and wearing an outfit Piccolo made for him. Their relationship develops beyond the original instrumental purpose of the training.

The Cell Games: Goku chooses Gohan; Cell exploits him
After Cell appears, Gohan trains with Goku in the Room of Spirit and Time. At the Cell Games, Goku insists that Gohan fight Cell second. Goku’s choice is strategic: he believes Gohan’s latent power can turn the fight. Yet Gohan initially refuses to fight Cell, even though he understands that anger is connected to the power Goku expects him to unleash.
Cell then turns Gohan’s relationships into a weapon against him. He creates the Cell Jrs. to hurt Gohan’s friends and draw out his rage. After Android 16 is destroyed, Gohan’s anger breaks through; he defeats the Cell Jrs. and takes on Cell. The enemy’s cruelty is deliberate: Gohan’s feelings for other people become a lever to make him more dangerous.

Android 16’s final words to Gohan, as reproduced on the official Dragon Ball site, frame the choice as protection rather than violence for its own sake: “It’s not a crime to fight for good. The wild animals and the forests I loved… Don’t let them be destroyed… Protect them for me…” The appeal gives Gohan a reason to fight, but the pressure and the danger remain real.
The outcome also carries a cost. Gohan does not immediately finish Cell when Goku tells him to. After Cell attempts to self-destruct, Goku sacrifices himself to stop him, and Gohan blames himself. Gohan later fights Cell again with a grievously injured arm. The arc makes him the decisive fighter, but it also shows that treating potential as a plan does not shield him from fear, responsibility, or grief.

The Buu arc: called back to meet another threat
The official retrospective says Buu overwhelms Gohan, after which Gohan trains in the Supreme Kai’s Realm to defeat him. The Elder Supreme Kai later draws out Gohan’s latent power; Gohan joins the fight against Buu, who absorbs him. As in the earlier arcs, the crisis turns to Gohan because his power may help stop an existential threat.
There is an important limit to what these events establish. The official summaries recount the danger, training, and renewed fight, but do not say that Gohan is unwilling to take part. It is fair to see another return to the defender role; it is not fair to describe every part of the Buu arc as adults forcing an unwilling Gohan into battle.

What the fighting threatens to obscure
The official profile says Gohan dreams of becoming a great scholar. That ambition is a direct counterweight to the way others repeatedly regard him as a source of battlefield power. After the Cell conflict, the official retrospective describes him as a 16-year-old high-school student who becomes Great Saiyaman to defend his town. His life includes study and a chosen, local form of protection—not only the expectation that he will decide the fate of the world.
Across these episodes, the strongest case for the title is not that Gohan never chooses to fight. It is that other people repeatedly make his potential central to their plans before he is old enough to carry their expectations easily. Piccolo’s survival training, Goku’s tactical decision, Cell’s calculated provocation, and the later Buu crisis each put him near the front line for different reasons. Keeping those differences in view makes Gohan’s courage visible without mistaking it for consent to every burden placed on him.
