Dragon Ball DAIMA episode 1, “Conspiracy,” opens by revisiting the Majin Buu Saga—but with a twist: two figures in the Demon Realm are watching those events unfold. For returning fans, the familiar history is an immediate point of recognition; for the new story, it explains how DAIMA’s Demon Realm perspective connects to Dragon Ball Z.
What happens in DAIMA’s opening recap?
Crunchyroll’s recap of the October 2024 premiere describes an opening that first explains the Dragon Balls and their rules, then cuts to two mysterious Demon Realm figures watching the events surrounding Majin Buu’s rise and threat to Earth. The figures are Degesu, Supreme Kai (Shin)’s younger brother, and Gomah, an aspiring Demon King impressed by the Saiyans’ power. They watch Babidi and Dabura unleash Buu against Goku and Earth’s other warriors. Read Crunchyroll’s episode 1 recap.

Why the recap works for returning fans
The scene brings back a major conflict and familiar characters from Dragon Ball Z, giving viewers who remember the Buu Saga a quick foothold in DAIMA. But it is not simply a detached “previously on” segment: Degesu and Gomah are watching the history too. That framing makes the old conflict part of the new story’s setup, connecting the Buu Saga to the Demon Realm characters and the conspiracy at the heart of the premiere.
Toei’s official synopsis says, “Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small.” It then points toward the adventure awaiting Goku, Supreme Kai, and new characters Glorio and Panzy in the Demon Realm. The premiere uses the familiar past to lead into that new premise, rather than making the series only a retelling of Dragon Ball Z. See Toei Animation’s DAIMA information.

Do you need to rewatch the Buu Saga first?
No full rewatch is established as necessary. Knowing the Buu Saga will help you recognize the events and stakes shown in the opening, but DAIMA also supplies context by explaining the Dragon Balls and showing the Demon Realm characters observing the past. If you want a refresher, revisit the Buu Saga; if you mainly want to follow DAIMA’s new adventure, you can start with episode 1 and let its setup orient you.
What to know about the series and episode
Toei promoted DAIMA as an original anime based on a new Dragon Ball story and characters from Akira Toriyama. The official credit names Toriyama for original work, story, and character design. The official Dragon Ball site reported that episode 1 premiered at the Dragon Ball DAIMATSURI event in Tokyo on October 6, 2024; it lists Yoshitaka Yashima as director, Aya Komaki as series director, Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru as animation character designer, and Yuko Kakihara for series composition and scenario. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the recap proven to help viewers?
The scene is a deliberately familiar setup for returning fans, but there is no published figure establishing how much it improves comprehension or enjoyment. “Perfect” is therefore best understood as a description of the opening’s appeal to fans who recognize the Buu Saga—not as a measured result that applies to every viewer.
