Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 1: Why “Conspiracy” Has the Makings of a Modern Masterpiece

“Conspiracy” turns familiar Dragon Ball history into the basis for a Demon Realm scheme. Its fresh perspective makes a strong opening argument, though one critic review cannot establish a consensus masterpiece.

“Conspiracy,” the first episode of Dragon Ball DAIMA, earns its promise not by proving that the series is already a masterpiece, but by giving a familiar franchise a fresh point of view. It revisits the Majin Buu saga through the eyes of Demon Realm characters, turns that history into a threat, and sets Goku and his friends on a new adventure. The premiere’s foundation is compelling; whether the series fulfills it is a question the episode alone cannot settle.

What happens in Dragon Ball DAIMA episode 1?

Spoilers for the premiere follow. The episode, titled “Conspiracy,” opens in the Demon Realm. Gomah and Degesu watch events connected to the Majin Buu saga and learn about Earth’s Dragon Balls and the fighters who could threaten them. The story then moves to Trunks’s birthday gathering, where Goku and his friends are together.

Gomah’s group plans to use Shenron to make Goku and his friends small. The scheme is meant to limit the danger they pose while Gomah pursues greater power in the Demon Realm. Toei’s official synopsis puts the central turn plainly: “Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small.” Toei Animation’s series announcement and Crunchyroll’s episode listing establish the premise.

Why the opening makes the story feel new

A familiar history becomes a threat

Rather than introducing the danger only from the heroes’ side, the premiere first shows Demon Realm characters looking at Earth’s fighters as a problem. That shift gives familiar franchise history a new function: the Majin Buu saga is not just background for returning viewers, but information that shapes the antagonists’ plan. This is an interpretation of the episode’s setup, not a stated creator intention.

The old cast is sent toward unfamiliar territory

The birthday gathering supplies an immediate link to the recognizable cast, while the Demon Realm conspiracy points toward a different kind of journey. That contrast is the premiere’s clearest promise: it wants the comfort of seeing Goku and his friends again, but it also has a new setting and a new source of conflict to explore.

Why “modern masterpiece” is a plausible argument—not a verdict

A premiere can suggest a series’ potential without proving its eventual quality. “Conspiracy” has a strong structural idea: revisit known events from an outsider’s perspective, make that knowledge the basis of a plan, then disrupt the heroes’ familiar world. It also benefits from a story and character-design contribution by Akira Toriyama. Toei describes DAIMA as an original anime based on a new Dragon Ball story and characters from Toriyama; the official Dragon Ball site says he worked on the original concept, story, and character designs. Those credits support the episode’s connection to his creative work, but do not mean he directed or animated it, or solely authored the finished episode.

The available episode-specific critical evidence is narrow. Rotten Tomatoes lists one critic review: Brandon Avery of Just My Opinion Reviews rated the episode 9/10 on October 16, 2024, praising the animation’s detail and the introduction of both past and new characters. That is one critic’s response, not a broad consensus or proof that the episode is a masterpiece. The most defensible claim is more measured: the premiere has the ingredients for an ambitious continuation, and its premise gives the series room to build on them.
