Ruth Westheimer, known to radio and television audiences as Dr. Ruth, died at her Manhattan home on July 12, 2024, aged 96. Her publicist and co-author Pierre Lehu confirmed her death to The Washington Post, which reported that no cause was noted.
Who was Dr. Ruth?
Westheimer was born Karola Ruth Siegel and became widely known as Ruth Westheimer, or Dr. Ruth. She was a sex therapist, behavioral therapist, author and media personality. Her Ed.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University, was awarded in 1970; the degree did not make her a physician.
Her life began in Nazi Germany. At age 10, she left without her parents and survived the Holocaust, according to USC Shoah Foundation. Her later path included migration, education and clinical work before she became a familiar voice on radio and television.
How did her broadcasting career begin?
Westheimer began her public media career at New York radio station WYNY-FM in 1980, according to the Library of Congress finding aid. Her program Sexually Speaking started in short installments and expanded as listeners sent in questions. The archive preserves listener correspondence and materials related to her radio and television work.

She began broadcasting after turning 50. The contrast between her established therapeutic work and her later public profile was part of what made her career distinctive: she brought frank discussion of sex and relationships to mainstream audiences through a conversational advice format.
What books did Dr. Ruth write?
The Guardian reported that Westheimer wrote more than 40 books, a secondary-source count rather than a verified total from a complete bibliography. Among the titles it names are:
Rank #2
- All in a Lifetime, her memoir.
- Sex for Dummies, an advice and educational title.
- Dr. Ruth’s Encyclopedia of Sex, a reference work.
Those titles serve different purposes: the memoir offers a route into her life story, while the other books focus on sex education and reference. Editions may differ, so check the publication details of a specific copy if you are looking for a particular version.
