The official trailer for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale brings the Crawley family and household staff into the 1930s, with Mary facing a public scandal as the family confronts financial trouble and a changing social order. The film opened in US theaters on September 12, 2025; it is now available in listed digital and physical home-viewing formats, with availability varying by retailer and region.
What the trailer shows
The official trailer sets up a household under pressure rather than spelling out every plot turn. Focus Features’ synopsis says Mary is at the center of a public scandal, while the family faces financial problems and social disgrace. The Crawleys and their staff must also adapt as the household moves toward a new chapter led by the next generation.
Those details describe the studio’s stated premise; the synopsis does not provide a scene-by-scene account or establish how each conflict is resolved. The trailer frames the return around both the family’s public standing and the people who keep Downton running.
Who returns, and who made the film?
Simon Curtis directed the film and Julian Fellowes wrote it, according to the Focus Features film page. The listed returning performers include Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggatt, Elizabeth McGovern, and Penelope Wilton. The cast list also includes Simon Russell Beale, Paul Giamatti, Dominic West, Alessandro Nivola, Joely Richardson, and Arty Froushan. A cast listing does not mean each performer receives the same amount of screen time in the trailer.

Release date and ways to watch at home
Focus Features gives the US theatrical release date as September 12, 2025, so it is a past release rather than an upcoming cinema date. Universal’s home-entertainment announcement says the digital release was September 30, 2025, and the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray street date was November 11, 2025.
Universal lists digital buy-or-rent options and physical editions. Specific platforms, retailer stock, prices, and availability depend on location and can change; check the current listing for your region.

Formats and bundle contents above are from Universal Pictures At Home. The separate Universal release announcement says participating retailers’ purchases include over one hour of exclusive content and names behind-the-scenes features; check the specific edition and retailer listing to confirm what is included with a purchase.
Choosing a film or franchise collection
Universal also lists three-film Blu-ray and DVD collections, which are a way to catch up on the feature films. Its September 29, 2025 announcement describes an Ultimate Legacy Collection: a 24-disc Blu-ray anthology containing all six television seasons and all three films, with a 52-page book and over 13 hours of bonus content. That announcement establishes the collection’s announced contents, not current stock at a particular retailer.

For a viewing decision, the practical distinction is how much of the franchise you want and whether you prefer digital access or a physical collection. Check current packaging and edition details before buying, especially if bonus material is important to you.

The Associated Press described the film as a closing chapter for the cast and franchise, while avoiding the claim that no future Downton story could ever be made. Producer Gareth Neame told AP, “If this is where it ends, I’m happy. If there’s no further visit to Downton, we have a beginning, a middle and an end.” That makes the film a planned farewell in the terms used by its makers, not proof that the fictional world can never return.

AP reported that the first two feature films, released in 2019 and 2022, earned more than $287 million worldwide combined. That figure is for those two earlier films together, not for The Grand Finale.
