Downton Abbey Creator Explains How Henry’s Absence Changed Mary’s Story in The Grand Finale

Matthew Goode’s decision not to return left Fellowes to explain Henry’s absence. In The Grand Finale, that choice puts Mary through scandal and toward leadership at Downton.

Spoilers for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Henry Talbot is absent because Matthew Goode did not want to return for the second or third films, Julian Fellowes said. To account for that absence, Fellowes made Henry an adulterer and divorced him from Mary—a reversal that leaves her facing scandal before she takes charge of Downton Abbey.

Why Henry is absent from the finale

Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey, told TVLine that Goode had not wanted to appear in the second or third films. “For Matthew, once he’d done the series, I think he felt he’d done the job,” Fellowes said. He added that he was sorry Goode did not participate, but that a writer on an ongoing story has to work with circumstances as they arise.

That is the production reason for Henry’s absence; the divorce is the fictional explanation Fellowes chose. The two should not be confused: Fellowes did not say Henry’s affair caused Goode’s decision not to return.

How the film explains Henry’s absence

Henry had also been away in 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era, where he was said to be abroad racing cars while Mary remained at Downton, as Entertainment Tonight reported. In The Grand Finale, the explanation becomes definitive: Henry is revealed to have been unfaithful, and Mary is divorced.

The divorce gives Mary a public scandal to contend with. Fellowes told TVLine that the story places her at odds with high society, rather than simply letting Henry’s absence remain a distant, off-screen detail.

Why the divorce changes Mary’s story

Mary has often occupied the winning position in the series’ social and personal conflicts. Fellowes described the finale’s reversal this way: “Mary has always been something of a winner all the way through, and suddenly it’s gone against her, and she’s a kind of loser.” He said the change created useful material for the character and for Michelle Dockery’s performance.

The reversal is not just a breakup. Mary must absorb a loss of status and deal with the consequences of scandal, while the family estate’s future moves into her hands. The Associated Press describes the third film as Lord Grantham preparing to let Mary run Downton on her own: AP’s report on the film.

Mary’s future beyond the marriage

By the end, Mary is responsible for the Abbey. Fellowes expressed confidence in her resilience, while leaving her romantic future open: “Mary will get through it. Whether she marries again or not, is something else.” The film closes with Downton looking toward a future under her stewardship, rather than resolving her story through a new marriage. Producer Gareth Neame told the AP that the closing image was intended to leave viewers with the sense that “this is how the camera finally pulls away and we leave Downton to its future.”
