DOOM: The Dark Ages gives the series a distinct new combat rhythm: its Shield Saw turns defense into an active part of fighting, encouraging players to hold their ground rather than rely only on constant forward momentum. That shift is satisfying, but the game’s sprawling levels and vehicle sequences do not sustain the same intensity. The result is a forceful change of pace with uneven momentum—not a simple return to classic DOOM.
What is DOOM: The Dark Ages?
Bethesda positions DOOM: The Dark Ages as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. Its medieval science-fantasy setting, heavy weapons, mechs and dragons give the series a different visual frame, while its combat design shifts the emphasis toward defense and counterattacks. Bethesda describes the levels as its largest and most expansive to date; that scale is an ambition, not a guarantee that every area feels purposeful.
The game launched May 15, 2025. Bethesda lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam, Battle.net and PlayStation 5, and notes access through Game Pass and GeForce NOW. Availability and subscription terms can vary by region and change over time. Bethesda’s launch-date information and platform availability details provide the official listings.
How does it differ from DOOM Eternal?
The clearest difference is the combat tempo. Eternal asks players to maintain aggressive movement and rapidly switch tools to manage threats. The Dark Ages gives the player more ways to stop an attack, meet it head-on and turn defense into an opening. That does not make the game slow by default: it changes what “aggressive” can mean, from continuous movement toward enemies to standing firm and choosing when to block, counter or press forward.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction is a useful way to judge the change, rather than treating either game’s pace as universally better. Players who enjoyed Eternal’s relentless flow may miss its momentum; players who want combat with more emphasis on timing and readable defensive responses may find the new approach refreshing. Traversal and level scale also matter: the larger spaces offer a different kind of exploration, but can dilute the intensity when they ask for too much travel between fights.
Is the Shield Saw fun to use?
It is the game’s defining idea because it is more than a shield. The Shield Saw can block and parry, stun or counter enemies, and be thrown as an attack. It also interacts with traversal and the environment, with its behavior changing depending on the material it hits, according to the official PlayStation Blog preview. Ars Technica likewise describes the shield as adding blocking, parrying and enemy stuns that create counterattack opportunities.

That blend gives defense a tangible purpose: blocking is not simply waiting for danger to pass, but a way to set up the next move. It also helps make the revised combat identity legible, even as the player faces large, busy battles. The mechanic is most compelling when attacks, counters and follow-ups form a continuous exchange; it is less persuasive if what you want from DOOM is uninterrupted forward motion.
Does the larger world keep the action moving?
Not consistently, according to the reviews. The Guardian found that some large levels become tiring to traverse and do not make full use of their space for combat. That is the central cost of the game’s scale: a bigger arena can create room for exploration, but empty stretches or underused terrain may weaken the urgency that makes a DOOM encounter satisfying. The game’s exploration pillar is real, yet not every expansive level appears to convert exploration into equally strong combat.

Ars Technica’s review identifies a different interruption: vehicle sections that break up the usual combat loop. Mechs and other large-scale set pieces broaden the spectacle, but they also shift attention away from the close, reactive fighting that best shows off the Shield Saw. These are critical judgments from those reviewers, not a claim that every player will find the same sections tedious.
Is the story a major reason to play?
The game’s director, Hugo Martin, described its design this way in the PlayStation Blog: “There are three pillars of engagement in Dark Ages; combat, exploration and story – three reasons to play, narrative is just one of them.” That framing fits a game built to offer more than a story campaign: the setting and cinematic presentation support the fantasy, while fighting and exploring are intended to carry their own appeal.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a story-first player, the premise and presentation may be enough to draw interest, but the available review evidence does not establish a detailed verdict on narrative quality. The more firmly supported point is structural: story is one part of the experience, not the sole reason the game expects players to stay.

It is easiest to recommend to players curious about a different combat rhythm, especially those intrigued by a shield that turns defense into offense. It is a less obvious fit for someone seeking the uninterrupted pace of DOOM Eternal: the new approach is more planted, and the reviews identify traversal and vehicle segments as potential breaks in momentum.

The title’s “lacks bite” verdict is an editorial judgment, not an established consensus. The more precise criticism is that the game’s central combat idea is stronger than the consistency of the larger experience around it. The Guardian’s level-scale concerns and Ars Technica’s objection to vehicle interludes explain why the new approach may not deliver the same force from one section to the next.
What changed after launch?
Bethesda’s September 4, 2025 note for Update 2.1 Hotfix 1 lists a fix for an issue that could prevent raising the Shield Saw to block or parry during the Super Shotgun reload animation. This is a specific documented fix; it does not, by itself, establish the game’s full current patch state. Bethesda’s hotfix notes give the details.
