Xbox introduced it as an id Software single-player dark fantasy first-person shooter and a prequel to DOOM (2016), with a Shield Saw, a Flail, an Atlan mech and a cybernetic war dragon among the trailer’s headline features.
What Xbox revealed on June 9, 2024
Xbox’s June 9, 2024 Showcase recap called the event appearance a worldwide reveal. It established the game’s identity and premise: id Software was making a single-player dark fantasy action FPS set before DOOM (2016).
The announcement named Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam and PlayStation 5 as platforms, and Game Pass as an access route. Game Pass is a subscription service, not a hardware platform. The recap gave a 2025 release window, but not a specific launch day.
Weapons and spectacle in the reveal trailer
The trailer’s combat imagery centered on the Slayer’s weapons, especially the Shield Saw and Flail, alongside the Shotgun. It also showed two enormous forms of wartime spectacle: the Atlan mech and a cybernetic war dragon. These elements conveyed the game’s dark-fantasy setting and scale; the later explanations of how they fit into combat came after the announcement.

What developers explained later
Xbox Wire’s January 23, 2025 developer feature added detail that was not part of the initial reveal. It described a more grounded combat approach built around melee abilities and strafing. The Shield Saw was presented as more than a weapon: it can block, attack at range and help with traversal. The feature also described less-linear levels where players can choose areas and objectives.
Game Director Hugo Martin described the intended combat feel this way: “It’s all about engagement; creating a loop or ‘dance’ that’s intuitive, innovative and loaded with depth – fun on the outside smart on the inside.” He added: “An appealing power fantasy that’s new but familiar – who hasn’t wanted to feel like an iron tank in the middle of a medieval war against hell?” Both statements appeared in Xbox Wire’s January 2025 feature.

Release date and later context
The reveal recap announced a 2025 window; the exact date, May 15, 2025, was reported in Xbox Wire’s January 2025 developer coverage. Keeping those milestones separate matters: the May date was not information supplied at the June 2024 reveal.
For readers looking beyond the original announcement, Xbox’s June 7, 2026 Showcase recap described DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations as an expansion and gave its launch date as July 7, 2026.
