That remark explains a development approach. It is not a cast announcement, and it does not confirm a release date or a finished script. In the most recent report we reviewed, TheWrap on August 16, 2026, Bruckheimer said talks with Johnny Depp and work on a screenplay were still ongoing.
What Bruckheimer actually said about a reboot
The reboot remark came in a June 24, 2024 interview with ComicBook.com. Bruckheimer said: “But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.” In the same interview he described a script that was still being written and said he hoped Disney would like it and give the production an opportunity to make it: “We have a script that’s being written right now. Hopefully it’ll come in in a month or so, and it’ll be as good as I think it will be. So let’s hope that Disney likes it and they give us an opportunity to make it.”
The headline phrase, “Don’t Have To Wait For Certain Actors,” is a fragment of that sentence. Read in full, it describes why a reboot would be simpler to schedule. It does not state that original cast members are excluded, and no report we reviewed says that.
Why a reboot would be easier to assemble
A continuation of the existing storyline ties the film to characters and actors whose availability has to be negotiated, and a reboot loosens that dependency. Bruckheimer’s point, as reported, is about scheduling and creative freedom. It is not a legal or contractual position. Any actor’s participation still depends on a signed agreement, and none of the reporting we reviewed describes one for a current cast member.

Will Johnny Depp be in it?
Depp’s possible return is the question most readers are asking, and the answer is still unconfirmed. On August 13, 2025, Variety reported that Bruckheimer had spoken with Depp about returning. Bruckheimer said: “If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it,” and added: “We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close.”
A year later, at the D23 event, Bruckheimer gave TheWrap a similar update: “We’re talking to Johnny. We’re working on a screenplay. Hopefully we can get this done.” TheWrap reported on August 16, 2026 that representatives for Depp, Bruckheimer and Disney had not responded to its requests for comment. These statements describe a producer’s conversations. They are not a signed casting deal, and they do not establish what role, if any, Depp would play.

Is it a reboot, and which script is it?
The reporting describes more than one development track, and the sources do not show how they connect. Treat each strand separately, with its own date and attribution.
| Development strand | Writer or project named | When it was reported | Status in the reporting we reviewed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reboot script | Jeff Nathanson | ComicBook.com, June 24, 2024 | Bruckheimer said a script was being written and hoped Disney would approve it. No approval is reported. |
| Female-led project | Margot Robbie, with Christina Hodson associated with the project | Robbie told Vanity Fair in 2022 that the project was no longer wanted. Bruckheimer said in May 2024 he hoped both projects could be made. | Current status not established. The statements conflict, and no newer report confirms the project is active. |
| Earlier draft | Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott | Recounted in Variety, 2025 | Described as earlier development. The reporting does not say whether it is related to Nathanson’s script. |
Because the sources do not say whether Nathanson’s script is a new draft of earlier work or a separate screenplay, the phrase “reboot” describes Bruckheimer’s stated intent rather than a confirmed production package.

The franchise’s box office

Both figures are publication estimates for the five existing films, not an audited current total, and they will not reflect any new release.

What would change the picture
- A statement from Disney or the studio confirming the project and its writer.
- A signed casting agreement for any returning actor, including Depp.
- A report that a script has been approved, rather than described as in progress.
- A named release date or start of production.
- A clear answer on whether the Nathanson script and the earlier Robbie and Mazin/Elliott projects are connected.
Until one of these appears, the reporting supports one clear statement: Bruckheimer has said the next film would be a reboot, and talks and screenwriting were still underway as of August 2026.
