“Don’t give me a fish; teach me how to fish” contrasts help that meets an immediate need with teaching a skill someone can use again. It is a modern variant of the familiar fish proverb, not a verified quotation from Laozi. An early related English wording appears in Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie’s Mrs. Dymond, though it is not the same sentence used today.
What does “Don’t give me a fish, teach me how to fish” mean?
The phrase asks for more than a one-time solution. Giving someone a fish addresses hunger now; teaching them how to catch fish offers a skill they may use to meet that need in the future. The contrast is between immediate assistance and the capacity to act independently—not a claim that short-term help is never useful.
That distinction is why the wording is often used to express the value of teaching, mentoring, or sharing practical knowledge. The title’s imperative form—“Don’t give me a fish, teach me how to fish”—is one way of expressing the broader proverb.
Who said the fish proverb?
The familiar saying is often attributed to Laozi, but a quote-check comparing it with the 81 chapters of the Tao Te Ching reports that the saying does not appear in the text examined: Quote Investigator’s examination of the attribution. That finding is reason to treat the Laozi attribution cautiously; it does not establish the proverb’s complete origin or rule out every possible historical source.

What is the earliest related wording?
Phrase Finder traces an early related English wording to Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie’s story Mrs. Dymond. The source reports that the story appeared in print in 1885 and the book was published in 1890. Ritchie’s sentence is an antecedent to the familiar proverb, not the exact modern “feed him for a day / feed him for a lifetime” wording.
“He certainly doesn’t practise his precepts, but I suppose the proverb is true: if you give a man a fish he is hungry again in an hour; if you teach him to catch a fish you do him a good turn.”

The dates and wording are reported by Phrase Finder; they support describing Ritchie’s text as an early related wording, not claiming it was necessarily the first version ever spoken or written.
How does the wording vary?
- “Don’t give me a fish, teach me how to fish” is an imperative addressed to someone offering help.
- “Give a man a fish…” is the familiar generalized form of the proverb, contrasting feeding someone with teaching them to fish.
- Ritchie’s wording says a person given a fish will be hungry again in an hour, while teaching him to catch one “do[es] him a good turn.” It is a related literary version, not a verbatim match for the familiar modern formulation.
Where else has the title wording appeared?
A 2010 article in the journal Adult Learning used the related title “Don’t Give Me a Fish; Teach Me How to Fish: A Case Study of an International Adult Learner.” Its bibliographic details are listed in a secondary index entry. This is an example of the phrase’s use in an educational context, rather than evidence about who first coined it.
