In a 2011 PerthNow opinion article, writer Paul Toohey profiled Carlos Miceli, an Argentine student who returned to Buenos Aires after a year studying mostly at Murdoch University in Perth. Miceli had planned to stay in Australia for three years. His reason for leaving early was not that he disliked the country: he valued its people and comfortable way of life, but felt they offered too little of the challenge and opportunity he wanted at that point in his life.
Which “Don’t Cry for Me Australia” is this?
The title refers to Paul Toohey’s opinion article published by PerthNow on December 6, 2011. It is about Miceli’s experience as an international student in Perth. A separate 2017 Substream Magazine feature uses similar wording in its title for an interview about The Smith Street Band; it is not the article discussed here.

Why did Miceli leave Perth?
Miceli’s decision came down to a mismatch between what he wanted from his time abroad and what he felt he was getting. He had gone to Australia to study marketing, improve his English, build business contacts, and grow personally. After a year, he believed the orderly, comfortable life he admired did not provide enough stimulation for his social and professional ambitions.

In Toohey’s account, Miceli described Australia as welcoming, modern, safe, clean, and comfortable. He also felt there was too much regulation, too much emphasis on leisure, and too little to engage someone seeking wider social and professional challenges. These are Miceli’s impressions as reported in a 2011 opinion article—not an assessment of Perth today, Australian universities, or international students generally.
Why had he chosen Perth?
Miceli had considered Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne before choosing Perth. Toohey reports that the city’s perceived isolation was part of its appeal: Miceli had read that Perth was the most isolated city in the world. He was looking for an English-speaking setting and a chance to make business connections as well as pursue his studies.

Miceli’s point was not that Australia or Perth was a bad place to live. It was that a place could offer a high quality of everyday life and still fail to meet what one person wanted from a particular stage of life. Toohey quotes him as saying: “So, while Australia and Perth are great places to live, they may not be great places to grow.”
