After Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected Pope Leo XIV on May 8, 2025, President Donald Trump called the choice “a great honor” for the United States and said he was “a little bit surprised, but very happy.” Trump also said he hoped to meet the new pope, but no meeting date was announced.
What Trump said after the election
Trump congratulated Prevost in a Truth Social post on May 8, saying, as reported by the Associated Press, “It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope.” He added that he looked forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. The Associated Press reported on the post and Trump’s later comments.
At the White House that day, Trump described the election as a source of national pride:
“Such an honor for our country. [Inaudible] It’s such a great honor for our country to have an American Pope. And I mean, what greater honor could there be? And we were a little bit surprised, but very happy. But it’s just a great—absolutely great honor.”

Trump said he hoped to meet Leo
Asked whether he planned to meet the pope, Trump replied, “I do, yes. They’ve already called.” Later, he said, “They’ve—they have already spoken to us, and we’ll see what happens.” His comments indicate that he said contact had taken place; they do not establish that a meeting was scheduled.

Who is Pope Leo XIV?
Leo XIV is the papal name chosen by Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, elected on May 8, 2025, after a conclave that began the previous day. The Vatican identifies him as the 267th Successor of Saint Peter, the first pope from the United States, and the first Augustinian pope. The Vatican’s official biography and Vatican News’s announcement record his election and chosen name.
“First American pope” is common shorthand; “first pope from the United States” is more precise. Prevost’s life and Church service also extend well beyond the United States. He served in Peru beginning in 1985, returned there for missionary and formation work in 1988, and acquired Peruvian citizenship by naturalization in 2015. In 2023, he was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. The Vatican biography says he speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian.

Trump later asserted that the Church chose Leo because he was American, according to the Associated Press. That is Trump’s explanation, not established evidence of the cardinals’ reasoning. The sources cited here confirm Leo’s election and U.S. origin, but do not establish why the conclave selected him.
