The LAPD said its initial investigation determined that the deaths were homicides. Nick Reiner was located and arrested at approximately 9:15 p.m. and booked for murder.
On December 16, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced two murder counts against Nick Reiner, along with a multiple-murder special-circumstance allegation and a dangerous-weapon allegation. Those are charges, not a final judgment. The District Attorney’s Office emphasized that the allegations must be proven in court and that Nick Reiner is presumed innocent unless and until he is found guilty.
What Trump said about Reiner
In his December 15 Truth Social post, Trump described Reiner as “tortured and struggling” and said that he and Michele had reportedly died because of anger Reiner had caused through what Trump called an incurable, mind-crippling “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”
Trump’s wording suggested that Reiner’s opposition to him had caused or contributed to the deaths. But neither the LAPD nor prosecutors had announced such a motive. At that point, investigators had established the deaths as homicides and had made an arrest; they had not publicly connected the case to Reiner’s political views.

“Trump Derangement Syndrome” is a political label, not a medical finding
In this context, “Trump Derangement Syndrome” is a pejorative expression Trump uses to describe what he portrays as irrational opposition to him. It is not an investigative conclusion, a diagnosis established in this case, or an explanation supplied by police or prosecutors.
A careful account should therefore say that Trump used the phrase to describe Reiner’s opposition to him. It should not say that Reiner “had” the syndrome or that the phrase explains the killings. No official source cited in the reporting supported Trump’s political-causation theory.
The post drew criticism from both parties
Trump’s remarks prompted swift criticism from Democrats and Republicans.
