At the National Association of Black Journalists’ convention in Chicago on July 31, 2024, ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott asked Donald Trump why Black voters should trust him after conduct she cited in her opening question. Trump called the question “nasty” and described her manner as “hostile.” In the transcript, those words refer to the question and the way it was asked—not to Scott herself.
What Rachel Scott asked Trump
Scott opened the interview by citing Trump’s past claims about political figures’ origins, comments to women of color in Congress, descriptions of Black prosecutors, attacks on Black journalists, and dinner with a white supremacist. She then asked: “Why should Black voters trust you after you have used language like that?” The list is part of Scott’s question; it should not be mistaken for an independent fact-check of each item.
The interview was part of the 49th annual NABJ Convention and Career Fair in Chicago. The panel consisted of Scott, ABC News senior congressional correspondent; Semafor political reporter Kadia Goba; and Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner. ABC News’ full-interview video and the event transcript document the exchange.
What Trump said, and what “nasty” referred to
Trump objected to the framing, saying he had not been asked a question in such a horrible manner. He called ABC a fake-news network, described the introduction as rude, and defended his record with Black voters. He later said, “I think it’s a very nasty question,” and complained that Scott had begun in “such a hostile manner.” He also called the exchange “a disgrace.”

The distinction matters: the transcript records Trump calling the question “nasty” and Scott’s manner “hostile”; it does not show him calling Scott “nasty.” The transcript is useful for the sequence and wording, while the full video is the primary audiovisual record for delivery, overlap, and context.
The interview went beyond the opening exchange
The contentious opening became the most prominent moment, but the session also addressed immigration and jobs, Kamala Harris’s racial identity, the vice-presidential choice, the killing of Sonya Massey, and policing. CBS News Chicago’s event report said the session began more than an hour late and that Trump blamed audio-equipment problems.

Why Trump’s appearance was disputed
The invitation had divided NABJ members before the event. Some objected that the appearance could give a platform to false claims or be read as an endorsement. NABJ president Ken Lemon said the invitation was “absolutely not an endorsement,” describing it instead as an opportunity to question a candidate. The Associated Press account covered the dispute before the convention.
