Don Lemon told Nicki Minaj to “get a life” after she criticized his coverage of an anti-ICE protest that disrupted a Minneapolis-area church service and called for his arrest. Minaj’s X post came first; Lemon answered in an Instagram video, where he called her comments homophobic. The exchange centered on what Lemon was doing at the protest: he described it as journalism, while Minaj condemned his presence and reporting.
What prompted the dispute?
Lemon’s reporting from an anti-ICE protest at a Minneapolis-area church service preceded the public exchange. The protest disrupted the service, and Lemon said he was documenting events and speaking with people involved, including the pastor, church members and members of the organization. The Independent quoted him describing the work as journalism and invoking the First Amendment; that was Lemon’s explanation of his role, not a settled finding about the dispute.

TheGrio and The Independent describe the protest coverage as the immediate backdrop to Minaj’s criticism. Their accounts frame the disagreement around Lemon’s presence and reporting at the church, rather than an independently established conclusion about his conduct.
What did Nicki Minaj say?
Mediaite dates Minaj’s post on X to January 19, 2026. The outlet reproduced her demand that Lemon be jailed: “HOW DARE YOU? I WANT THAT THUG IN JAIL!!!!! HE WOULD NEVER DO THAT TO ANY OTHER RELIGION. LOCK HIM UP!!!!!” TheGrio also reported that Minaj called Lemon a “thug” and used a homophobic slur. Those are Minaj’s words and accusations, not established facts about Lemon.

The reports establish the sequence: Lemon covered the protest, Minaj criticized him on X and called for his arrest, and Lemon replied on Instagram. They do not establish an independent resolution of the underlying disagreement over Lemon’s role at the protest. His account was that he reported on events and spoke with participants; Minaj condemned his actions and called for him to be jailed. The quoted accusations and judgments should be understood as statements by the people who made them.
