Flash flooding hit Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, on Sunday, July 28, 2024, after a strong thunderstorm. The park said staff and local emergency responders directed guests to safety; individual accounts described visitors wading through floodwater and being delayed while trying to leave. The incident is over, not a current emergency.
What happened at Dollywood?
Dollywood said a strong thunderstorm caused flash flooding at the park. In a statement reproduced by WYMT, a park spokesperson said personnel, assisted by the Pigeon Forge Police and Fire Departments, directed guests to safety. The park reported one minor injury, without specifying its nature.
Dollywood public relations director Wes Ramey told CBS News that almost five inches of rain fell in about one hour. That is Ramey’s account, not an independently established weather-service measurement. He described the event as “an unprecedented flooding event”; this was his characterization, not a formal weather classification.
Were visitors trapped or stranded?
Contemporaneous reports included individual accounts of people wading through floodwater and visitors delayed or stranded as they tried to leave. Those accounts do not establish that every guest was trapped. The park’s statement says staff and emergency responders directed guests to safety.

Flooding also affected access near the park: McCarter Hollow Road, close to the entrance, collapsed and was closed, according to CBS News. Road access and park operations are separate concerns; a park reopening does not by itself confirm that nearby roads are clear.
When did Dollywood reopen, and what happened to July 28 tickets?
Dollywood reopened at noon on Monday, July 29, 2024. Officials said tickets dated July 28 would be honored or rain checks provided, as reported by WBIR. That arrangement applied to the affected date; it should not be confused with the park’s general rain-check guidance.

What should future visitors know about storms and rain checks?
Dollywood’s current rain policy says storms may close some or all rides, and reopening depends on the storm moving away from the park. Its published guidance says guests may request a rain check if the park experiences rain for more than one hour that day. This is general policy, not a statement of the precise arrangement made for July 28, 2024.
For a planned visit, check Dollywood’s operating calendar and travel alerts before setting out. Hours and road conditions can change, and the 2024 road closure is not evidence of current access conditions.
