Carl Dean’s last widely reported public photographs were taken during a rare outing in Brentwood, Tennessee, in December 2019. He died in Nashville on March 3, 2025, at 82—more than five years later. His cause of death was not announced, and his family asked for privacy.
Where Carl Dean was last seen
The December 2019 Brentwood outing is the last public appearance photographs identified in major entertainment coverage. Reports described Dean, a Nashville businessman who owned an asphalt-paving company, as someone who generally avoided publicity. Because private photographs may exist outside public reporting, “last widely reported public photographs” is more precise than claiming these were definitively his final images.

What the last photos show—and what they do not establish
The photographs document Dean during that Brentwood outing, but available coverage does not establish a complete photographer or licensing record for every image. Captions and entertainment reports should not be treated as proof of details that are not explicitly identified. There is also no reliable basis for inferring Dean’s health, his reasons for being out, or the identities of other people who may appear in an image.

How long Dolly Parton and Carl Dean were married
Parton and Dean remained married for nearly 60 years, from their May 30, 1966 wedding until his death in 2025. Their relationship was notably private: Dean rarely appeared beside Parton at public events and preferred to stay out of the entertainment spotlight.
Why Carl Dean was rarely photographed
Dean’s absence from celebrity coverage was largely a matter of preference. The Los Angeles Times described him as someone who stayed in the background, while Parton acknowledged how unusual their privacy was. In a statement quoted by the Associated Press from 1984, she said, “A lot of people say there’s no Carl Dean, that he’s just somebody I made up to keep other people off me.”
The story behind “Jolene”
Parton has connected Dean to the premise of “Jolene.” She said a bank teller’s attention to him inspired the song’s story. The Associated Press characterized the episode as an innocent incident, not a reported affair.
