Doja Cat’s towel appearance was her departure look from the Mark Hotel on May 6, 2024—not the outfit she wore on the Met Gala steps. She changed into an oversized white Vetements T-shirt dress with a wet appearance for the red carpet; the see-through two-piece was a separate look for an after-party.
What Doja Cat wore at the 2024 Met Gala
The night’s looks came in three distinct moments:
- Leaving the hotel: Doja walked out of the Mark Hotel wearing towels, including a Crown Affair hair towel, according to Vogue’s account. The Associated Press also reported on the towel-clad departure.
- On the red carpet: She changed into an oversized white T-shirt dress before reaching the museum steps. Its damp, clingy appearance made the simple cotton garment look wet.
- At an after-party: She later wore a separate monochromatic nude, see-through two-piece. Vogue described it as the final Vetements ensemble of the night.
That distinction matters: the see-through outfit was not the wet-look T-shirt dress worn on the Met steps.
How the wet-look dress effect was made
In a Vogue interview published May 7, 2024, Doja said the effect involved water and hair gel. She identified the outfit as Vetements and explained that the concept centered on a wet T-shirt.

Doja connected the white cotton tee to the evening’s theme and described the T-shirt as timeless. Her explanation included her own poetic framing of cotton; it is best understood as her inspiration for the look, not as a factual claim about cotton’s botanical or commercial status. The Associated Press likewise reported that she referred to cotton and the lasting appeal of a white tee.
Makeup and styling details
Makeup artist Pat McGrath told Vogue that glitter was used to create “shimmering, enchanted tears of joy” on Doja’s cheeks. The look also featured gilded cat-eye makeup, adding a theatrical finish to the otherwise deliberately plain-looking T-shirt dress.
