Dog Man is Dav Pilkey’s bestselling graphic-novel series about a crime-fighting hero with a dog’s head and a human body. He is created when a police dog and a human police officer are fused after being injured on duty. The books turn that unusual origin into fast, silly comic-book adventures while exploring kindness, empathy, persistence, friendship, family, and redemption.

For a new reader, begin with the first book and continue chronologically. As of August 12, 2026, Dog Man: Big Jim Believes is the newest published main-series title; Dog Man: A Sprinkle in Time is scheduled for November 3, 2026. The franchise also includes a 2025 animated movie, a Nintendo Switch game, official activity products, and a touring stage musical.

Publication-status note: This guide reflects the official franchise information available through August 12, 2026. Retail prices, stock, regional availability, tour dates, and home-entertainment editions can change.

What is Dog Man?

Dog Man is Dav Pilkey’s bestselling children’s graphic-novel series about a crime-fighting hero who has a dog’s head and a human body. The character is created after a police dog and a human police officer are both badly injured on duty and doctors save them by joining the surviving parts of each body together.

  • Perfect gift for new parents, birthday celebrations & happy occasions of all kinds.

The result is a hero who is “part dog, part man, and ALL HERO”: Dog Man is devoted to protecting and serving, but he must also manage canine instincts, human responsibilities, strange villains, and the everyday complications of friendship and family. The books combine slapstick, comic-book parody, visual sound effects, absurd action, and surprisingly sincere lessons about empathy, kindness, persistence, honesty, and being true to yourself.

The series began in August 2016. Scholastic’s author biography reported more than 60 million copies in print and translations in 47 languages at the time of its latest cited crawl; those figures are time-sensitive and should not be treated as permanent totals.

Why the series is so popular

Dog Man works on several levels at once. Younger readers can enjoy the goofy names, visual jokes, battles, and exaggerated cartoon peril. Older children can follow the continuing relationships, recurring gags, comic-book references, and character growth. Adults often notice that the apparently simple hero-versus-villain setup gradually becomes a story about mistakes, forgiveness, cooperation, and chosen family.

Pilkey also makes the books feel like something children could create themselves. The pages use deliberately childlike comic-making conventions, handwritten-style lettering, visual sound effects, mini-comics, and direct encouragement to draw and tell stories. That format is not just decoration: it invites readers to participate in the act of making comics rather than treating the book as a distant, formal text.

Main characters

  • Dog Man: The loyal hybrid police hero. His dog behavior creates much of the comedy, while his sense of duty and compassion drives the story.
  • Petey the Cat: Dog Man’s principal recurring opponent and one of the franchise’s most important anti-heroes. Petey makes bad choices, but he is not best understood as an unchanging villain. His relationship with Dog Man develops into an extended examination of redemption, family, friendship, and cooperation.
  • Li’l Petey: Petey’s kitten clone and a major emotional force in the series. Li’l Petey’s bond with Dog Man complicates the traditional hero-and-villain relationship and helps bring out Petey’s more vulnerable side.
  • 80-HD: A recurring member of the Dog Man universe whose name reflects the series’ love of visual jokes and playful technology.
  • Big Jim: A prominent character whose backstory and development receive particular attention in the later books Big Jim Begins and Big Jim Believes.
  • Sarah Hatoff: A recurring human character connected to the wider cast and the series’ comic-book world.
  • Other police and animal characters: The cast expands frequently, allowing Pilkey to introduce new comic foils, allies, inventions, and antagonists without abandoning the central Dog Man–Petey relationship.

Dog Man books in order

The following is the chronological order of the main Dog Man graphic-novel series as listed by Scholastic. It does not include the separate Cat Kid Comic Club spin-off series or activity books.

Which book should a new reader start with? Start with the first Dog Man. The books are accessible individually, but reading chronologically makes the evolving Dog Man–Petey–Li’l Petey relationships and the later character-focused stories easier to appreciate. As of the research date, Big Jim Believes is the newest published main-series book. A Sprinkle in Time is forthcoming, not a previously released title; Scholastic’s description says Grandpa alters the fabric of time and space while Dog Man and his companions continue their adventure.

For a first purchase, Dog Man books in order can mean either buying the individual volumes chronologically or choosing a verified boxed collection. Scholastic lists a six-book Supa Epic Collection, a ten-book Supa Buddies Mega Collection, and other sets. Check the exact contents before buying because collections, editions, and stock vary.

The central themes

Although the books are built around jokes and action, their emotional center is unusually consistent:

  • Empathy: Characters are repeatedly encouraged to understand what someone else is feeling rather than judging only their behavior.
  • Kindness and friendship: Cooperation often succeeds where force does not, and apparently mismatched characters can become genuine friends.
  • Persistence: Failure is treated as part of learning. The characters make mistakes, try again, and keep working toward a better outcome.
  • Redemption: Petey’s role is especially important here. The series allows a former antagonist to change without pretending that his earlier choices did not matter.
  • Family: The books explore biological family, adoption-like bonds, friendship as family, and the responsibilities that come with caring for someone else.
  • Creativity and self-expression: The comics’ handmade-looking style encourages children to draw, write jokes, invent characters, and make their own stories.

These themes are presented through comedy rather than lectures. A chase, gross-out joke, or ridiculous invention usually comes first; the emotional lesson emerges from what the characters do afterward.

Is Dog Man appropriate for children?

Scholastic lists the original book for ages 7 and up and classifies it as comedy and humor. That is useful starting guidance, but a child’s reading comfort matters more than a single age label.

Parents and educators should expect:

  • Fast-moving cartoon action and exaggerated peril.
  • Rude, silly, or gross-out humor.
  • Villainous schemes and comic-book conflict rather than realistic violence.
  • Emotional situations involving loneliness, family, mistakes, forgiveness, and loyalty.
  • Visual storytelling that can make the books approachable for children who are reluctant to read long blocks of prose.

Scholastic’s teacher-facing material presents the graphic-novel format as particularly engaging for striving readers because illustrations support decoding and comprehension. That supports using Dog Man as a motivational or gateway format, but it does not justify promising improved literacy outcomes for every child. Some readers will need help with the speed of the panels, slang, visual sequencing, or implied jokes.

How the visual format supports reading

A Dog Man book is not simply a conventional novel with pictures added. The reader has to interpret panel order, facial expressions, body language, speech balloons, handwritten captions, sound effects, and mini-comics. That combination can help a child stay engaged while practicing sequencing and inference.

The books also model a low-pressure approach to creativity. Their intentionally imperfect-looking comics suggest that a story does not need polished art before it can be shared. For a classroom or home activity, a useful follow-up is to ask a child to create a one-page comic with three elements: a problem, a visual sound effect, and a character who solves the problem in an unexpected way. Scholastic’s official teaching and series materials include printable resources and comic-making activities that can extend this idea.

The 2025 animated movie

Dog Man is also a DreamWorks Animation feature distributed by Universal Pictures. The film uses the familiar origin: a police dog and human police officer are fused after being injured, creating Dog Man, who is determined to serve and protect.

The movie focuses especially on Petey’s cloning scheme and the arrival of Li’l Petey. When the kitten is placed in danger, Dog Man and Petey are pushed into a reluctant alliance. That setup preserves the franchise’s central tension while giving the film a clear emotional story about a complicated parent-child bond and an enemy who must cooperate with the hero.

The principal credited voice cast includes Pete Davidson as Petey, Lil Rel Howery as Chief, Isla Fisher as Sarah Hatoff, Poppy Liu as Butler, Stephen Root as Grampa, Billy Boyd as Seamus, and Ricky Gervais as Flippy. Peter Hastings directed and Karen Foster produced.

The movie was released in 2025 and is no longer an upcoming release. DreamWorks currently lists it as available through digital, Blu-ray, and DVD home entertainment. The exact retailer, edition, price, language options, and regional rights should be checked before purchase; the official movie site has identified pathways including Amazon, Target, Walmart, Gruv, Fandango At Home, Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube, Microsoft, Verizon, and Xfinity.

Families comparing the film with the books should expect an adaptation of the premise and characters, not assume scene-for-scene fidelity. The books’ serialized character development and page-based jokes have to be reshaped for a feature-length animated story. For a physical movie night collection, compare the Dog Man movie DVD and Blu-ray listings carefully, since bonus features and regional formats may differ.

Contemporaneous coverage identified the film as rated PG for some action and rude humor. That is broadly consistent with the franchise’s comic tone, but parents of especially sensitive children may want to preview the movie rather than relying only on the rating.

Video game: Mission Impawsible

Dog Man: Mission Impawsible is an officially licensed action-platforming game for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo lists a December 6, 2024 release date, single-system play, 50 levels, puzzle-solving, bosses, collectibles, and playable Dog Man and Supa Buddies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game adds equipment such as rocket shoes, retractable claws, grappling equipment, and power gloves. Nintendo lists the software as rated ESRB Mild Fantasy Violence. That makes it a more active screen-based franchise experience than the books, but it is not a replacement for the series’ drawing, reading, and visual-comedy appeal.

For a gift buyer comparing formats, Dog Man: Mission Impawsible makes the most sense for a child who already has access to a Nintendo Switch and enjoys platform games. Confirm the physical or digital edition, console compatibility, and current price before ordering.

Dog Man: The Musical

TheaterWorksUSA presents Dog Man: The Musical, a stage adaptation of Pilkey’s books. Kevin Del Aguila wrote the book and lyrics, Brad Alexander composed the music, and Jen Wineman directed and choreographed the production.

Best Value

TheaterWorksUSA has maintained touring information for the 2025–26 season and directs audiences to the production’s dedicated site for dates. Availability is regional and can change quickly, so families, schools, and libraries should check the current venue, performance date, age guidance, ticket seller, accessibility information, and cancellation policy rather than relying on an old tour listing. The production is best treated as a local-event opportunity, not as a universally available show.

If a production is touring near you, Dog Man: The Musical can work for a family outing or school field trip. Ticketing and any referral or media-partnership arrangements must be confirmed with the production or its ticketing partner; not every performance offers an affiliate program.

Dog Man gifts and activities

The most useful gift depends on what the child actually enjoys:

Child’s interest Good fit What to check
Reading and collecting Individual graphic novels or a chronological boxed set Book count, included titles, format, and whether the set stops before the newest volumes
Drawing and making stories An official Dog Man coloring book, sticker book, or comic-making activity Whether it is an official Scholastic product and whether the activity suits the child’s age
Stuffed-character play An official Dog Man plush or a books-plus-plush bundle featuring Dog Man and Li’l Petey Character identity, size, age warning, materials, and whether the listing is licensed
Family movie nights The 2025 animated film on digital, Blu-ray, or DVD Region, language, bonus features, and the exact edition
Interactive games Dog Man: Mission Impawsible for Nintendo Switch Console ownership, physical versus digital format, and the Mild Fantasy Violence rating
Classroom libraries Multi-book collections, teaching guides, printable activities, and comic-making exercises Collection contents, duplicate titles, classroom suitability, and current publisher availability

Scholastic lists related physical products including Dog Man: With Love, an official coloring book, a sticker book, boxed sets, collections, and plush bundles. Prefer publisher-listed or clearly licensed products over generic marketplace merchandise, especially when buying for a classroom or young child.

Who will enjoy Dog Man most?

  • Children who like visual jokes, fast pacing, superheroes, animals, or comic-book action.
  • Readers who are more willing to pick up a graphic novel than a long prose chapter book.
  • Families looking for humor with clear themes of kindness, persistence, and forgiveness.
  • Teachers who want an engaging entry point for discussing panels, sequencing, character motivation, and comic creation.
  • Fans who want a franchise that extends beyond books into animation, games, theater, crafts, and collectible products.

It may be a weaker fit for children who dislike rude humor, chaotic plots, cartoon peril, or stories that mix heartfelt lessons with deliberately silly jokes. The best test is usually a few pages of the first volume: if the panel layout and humor connect, the continuing cast and serialized relationships provide plenty of material to explore.

Bottom line

Dog Man is a children’s graphic-novel franchise centered on a dog-headed, human-bodied police hero, but its lasting appeal comes from more than the premise. Dav Pilkey combines accessible visual storytelling with slapstick comedy and an ongoing story about empathy, family, friendship, mistakes, and second chances. Start with the books in publication order, treat Big Jim Believes as the latest published main-series volume as of August 2026, and treat A Sprinkle in Time as the November 3, 2026 forthcoming release. The movie, Switch game, stage musical, and official creative products offer legitimate extensions for families who want more than the books.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Dog Man is best understood as a humorous, highly visual children’s graphic-novel series with a continuing emotional story—not just a superhero parody. The first book is the best starting point; the 2025 movie, Nintendo Switch game, crafts, collections, and touring musical are optional extensions.
