Its comic-book energy and story about empathy give it warmth beneath the gags, though the film’s crowded plot is less distinctive than the graphic novels’ anarchic style.
What is Dog Man about?
Directed by Peter Hastings and produced by Karen Foster, this DreamWorks Animation film adapts Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man graphic-novel series. A police dog and his human officer are injured together; a life-saving operation fuses them into one crime-fighting hero. Dog Man then tries to impress the Chief while thwarting Petey the Cat’s plan to clone himself.
The story’s emotional center is Lil Petey, Petey’s kitten clone, who forms an unexpected bond with Dog Man. When Lil Petey needs rescuing, Dog Man and Petey must work together. DreamWorks frames the family thread as a force that can bring even hostile characters together. The official cast includes Pete Davidson as Petey, Lil Rel Howery as the Chief, Isla Fisher as Sarah Hatoff, Poppy Liu as Butler, Stephen Root as Grampa, Billy Boyd as Seamus, and Ricky Gervais as Flippy. DreamWorks’ film page has the full credits and synopsis.
Does the movie capture the books’ appeal?
Fast, visual comedy
The film leans into movement, visual gags, and the quick, goofy spirit that suits a comic-book hero called Dog Man. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus describes it as “Realizing Dav Pilkey’s canine creation with a frenzied energy that never lets up, Dog Man will delight kids while throwing their parents a bone.” That is a consensus, not a guarantee that every viewer will respond the same way, but it captures the movie’s strongest apparent appeal: lively silliness designed to keep younger viewers engaged.

A busy adaptation
That energy comes with a trade-off. Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy praised the visual leap to the screen but argued that something is missing: the film smooths out the books’ idiosyncrasy and combines storylines in a way that can be hard to follow. He rated it two stars out of four. For readers attached to Pilkey’s unpredictable comic rhythms, the movie may feel more conventional and more crowded than the source material.
DreamWorks described the series, on its page accessed October 8, 2026, as having 12 books, more than 60 million copies in print, and translations into 47 languages. Those figures are the studio’s and may change; they help explain the scale of the adaptation’s built-in audience, not the quality of the film.

Is Dog Man good for young kids and grown-up kids?
The film is rated PG for “some action and crude humor,” and its listed home-release runtime is 01:29:08, or about 89 minutes. Those details offer a practical starting point, but they cannot determine whether the humor or action suits a particular child. Parents may want to consider the child’s comfort with animated peril and rude jokes.
For adults, the best fit is likely to be viewers who enjoy Pilkey’s characters, playful comic-book presentation, or a family story built around empathy. Adults expecting the books’ full oddball spontaneity may be less satisfied by the film’s more compressed, crowded adaptation. The available sources establish the premise but do not establish a formal age threshold or test how easily newcomers follow the plot, so familiarity with the books is a reasonable advantage rather than a requirement proved by evidence.

How was the film received?
Rotten Tomatoes showed an 82% Tomatometer from 105 reviews and an 81% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 verified ratings when accessed October 8, 2026. These are a dated snapshot, and both scores and counts can change. The favorable aggregate and Kennedy’s two-star AP review represent different perspectives: one emphasizes the film’s appeal and energy, while the other objects to its crowded storytelling and reduced idiosyncrasy. Neither should be mistaken for universal agreement. See the current Rotten Tomatoes listing and Kennedy’s Associated Press review.

The film works as a quick introduction to the fused police-dog hero and the conflict with Petey, but the books remain the more direct way to experience Pilkey’s original comic style. The movie is best approached as a lively adaptation with its own family-and-empathy emphasis, not as a replacement for the graphic novels’ particular brand of chaos. If the film’s characters click, the official DreamWorks page connects it to the source series.
