Yes. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. That means prerecorded video sent as a live stream should be expected to undergo YouTube-side transcoding too. The creator’s encoding is the incoming feed; it does not establish that YouTube delivers that same encoding unchanged.
What “re-encode” means in a live stream
There are two separate stages. First, the source video is encoded into a live feed by the creator’s software or hardware encoder. YouTube ingests that feed, then transcodes the live stream into different output formats for delivery. YouTube describes automatic transcoding for live streams generally and does not document a separate processing path for prerecorded material versus a camera feed.
So the useful answer is that a prerecorded source should be expected to be transcoded after it reaches YouTube. The available documentation does not establish whether camera-originated and prerecorded inputs follow identical internal processing at every stage.
What this means for source quality and settings
Your upload file and encoder settings affect the feed sent to YouTube, not a guaranteed viewer-side format. YouTube’s published recommendations are input settings; they are not promises that viewers will receive the same bitrate, codec, resolution, or encoding as the source.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For 1080p at 30 fps, the page recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. These are recommendations for the incoming encoder feed, not a viewer-output specification. YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. Check the live guidance before a broadcast because recommendations can change: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Will a live archive be an untouched copy?
No such guarantee follows from YouTube’s archiving guidance. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not promise the archive is a bit-for-bit copy of the source file or preserves its original encoding. How to prepare a prerecorded live stream

Choose your source and encoding workflow. A software or hardware encoder turns the prerecorded video into a live feed. Hardware is optional; it does not prevent YouTube from transcoding the feed.

Match YouTube’s current input guidance. Select a supported codec and use an appropriate resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. For the specific 1080p/30 fps examples and keyframe guidance, consult YouTube’s encoder settings page.

Test and preview before the event. YouTube recommends testing the stream, previewing it in Live Control Room, and monitoring stream health. For higher-production-value events, it recommends professional-grade hardware encoders as an option, not as a way around platform transcoding. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Judge the result as a delivery stream. Assess playback on the devices and connections your viewers are likely to use; do not assume the source file’s encoding will be the encoding they receive.
