Yes. YouTube Live supports incoming streams at up to 60 frames per second (fps). To send a 60 fps stream, your source and encoder must output 60 fps, and your connection must sustain the chosen resolution and bitrate. YouTube then transcodes the stream into formats for viewers, so their playback quality and frame rate may differ.
What you need for a 60 fps live stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance allows up to 60 fps and supports encoder workflows for gameplay, screen sharing, external audio/video hardware, and more advanced productions. An encoder can be software or standalone hardware; YouTube does not require a particular product, camera, webcam, or capture card. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.
- Your video source and encoder must produce the frame rate you want to send.
- Choose resolution and codec before setting the bitrate; YouTube’s recommendations vary by both.
- Use a stable upload connection with enough capacity for the full stream bitrate and fluctuations.
YouTube’s recommended bitrate for 60 fps
The following are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended encoder bitrates for 60 fps, in Mbps. They are ingest settings, not a guarantee of the quality any individual viewer will receive. YouTube transcodes live video for different devices and network conditions.
| Resolution | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p60 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For example, YouTube lists 6 Mbps as the H.264 minimum for 1080p60 but recommends 17 Mbps. Minimum is not the same as recommended: a stream may be more vulnerable to visible quality loss or instability when configured at the minimum, especially if the connection varies. The full table and settings are on YouTube’s live encoder settings page.

Encoder and stream settings to check
YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a keyframe interval of two seconds; the interval should not exceed four seconds. For standard dynamic range, the advanced settings include Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth. HDR has additional codec and ingestion requirements, so ordinary 60 fps support should not be taken as proof that every HDR configuration is supported.
- Select resolution and frame rate. Set the source and encoder to the intended resolution and 60 fps. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default; its guidance also describes using a custom stream key and manual resolution settings when you need to select resolution manually.
- Choose a supported codec and bitrate. Use the matching row in YouTube’s bitrate table above. Codec choice affects the published minimum and recommended values.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Use constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, without exceeding four seconds.
- Use the recommended ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Check color settings if relevant. For standard dynamic range, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth as listed in YouTube’s advanced settings. Check the separate HDR requirements before configuring an HDR stream.
Make sure your upload connection can sustain it
The encoder bitrate is only part of the connection’s load. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom for variation. For instance, a connection with exactly the same upload capacity as your selected video bitrate leaves no room for fluctuations or other devices using the network. A shared connection may have less bandwidth available while you stream.

- Run a speed test on the connection and device you plan to use.
- Confirm available upload bandwidth exceeds the stream’s total bitrate, with headroom.
- Test with representative movement and audio; a static test image will not reveal how a more active program behaves.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and live event.

Troubleshoot a 60 fps stream
The stream is not actually sending 60 fps
Check that both the source and encoder are configured for 60 fps. YouTube detects incoming settings, so choosing a 60 fps option in only one part of the workflow may not make the full signal 60 fps.

The video looks soft or blocky
Check the bitrate against YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution and codec. Also confirm the source itself has enough detail; a 60 fps setting does not increase source resolution or restore detail lost before encoding.
The stream drops frames or becomes unstable
Check whether upload bandwidth is sufficient for the full bitrate with the recommended headroom. Other users or devices on a shared network can reduce capacity. Run a representative test and review YouTube’s stream-health status.

Viewers do not see 60 fps or the selected resolution
YouTube transcodes incoming streams into multiple output formats. The stream’s ingest settings therefore do not guarantee that each viewer’s device, app, or network will play the same resolution and frame rate.
