Yes. YouTube Live lists AV1 as a supported encoder video codec and supports streams up to 60 fps, including 4K/2160p at 60 fps. The published guidance applies to SDR: YouTube says AV1 is not supported for HDR. At 4K, plan for normal latency because YouTube’s low-latency improvement option is unavailable.
What YouTube specifies for AV1 at 4K/60
YouTube Help’s encoder settings list AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and mark it, alongside H.265/HEVC, as recommended. The settings specify a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. These are platform settings, not a guarantee that every encoder or network can sustain the stream.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Video codec | AV1 is supported for encoder streaming over RTMP/RTMPS. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 4K/2160p at 60 fps is listed. |
| AV1/H.265 bitrate at 4K/60 | 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum. |
| Bitrate encoding | CBR. |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| AV1 tiling | At 3840×2160 and above, use at least two tile columns. |
| Latency at 4K | Normal latency; the low-latency improvement option is unavailable. |
These bitrate limits are YouTube’s published configuration bounds, not a promise of stable transmission or a measure of visual quality. YouTube recommends RTMPS over RTMP. See its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
How to configure a standard SDR AV1 stream
- Confirm the encoder supports the full combination. Check AV1 encoding, 3840×2160 output at 60 fps, RTMPS, CBR, configurable keyframes, and AV1 tile columns. YouTube permits software or standalone hardware encoders, but its guidance does not certify a particular model for 4K/60 AV1.
- Set the video output. Choose AV1, 3840×2160 resolution, and 60 fps for an SDR stream.
- Set bitrate and timing. Use CBR and keep the bitrate within YouTube’s published 10–40 Mbps bounds for AV1/H.265 at 4K/60. Set a 2-second keyframe interval if available; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Set AV1 tiling. At 3840×2160 and above, configure at least two tile columns.
- Connect to YouTube securely. Use RTMPS where the encoder offers it, and enter the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not share or publish it.
- Run a representative test before the event. Include typical movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health and any encoder or Live Control Room messages. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming that matching the settings alone guarantees a healthy stream. Its encoder setup guide covers creating a stream with an encoder.
AV1 is not the HDR choice in this guidance
YouTube Help states, “AV1 is not supported for HDR.” If HDR is required, the cited encoder guidance specifies H.265/HEVC for HDR rather than AV1. Do not treat support for AV1 at 4K/60 as support for AV1 4K/60 HDR. YouTube’s published settings do not establish a controlled quality or efficiency comparison between AV1 and other codecs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What 4K means for latency
YouTube says the option to improve for low latency is not available for 4K/2160 streams; they are set to normal latency and optimized for quality. If immediate audience interaction is more important than 4K, choose a workflow and resolution that fit the latency options available in Live Control Room, then test it before broadcast.
Troubleshoot a failed or unstable stream
- AV1 is unavailable in the encoder: The selected encoder or configuration may not support AV1. Confirm codec support for the actual resolution and frame rate; YouTube’s accepted-codec list does not mean every encoder supports every combination.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the correct stream key is configured and that the encoder is sending over RTMPS or RTMP as selected. Look for connection errors in the encoder and stream-health messages in Live Control Room.
- Stream health reports bitrate trouble: Check the outgoing CBR setting and whether the network can sustain the selected bitrate. The 10–40 Mbps range is YouTube’s published AV1/H.265 bound for 4K/60, not a network-capacity guarantee.
- Playback or processing does not match expectations: Verify 3840×2160 output, 60 fps, the keyframe interval, and at least two AV1 tile columns. Test the complete signal path with representative content and monitor YouTube’s status messages.
- You need HDR: Switch to the HDR codec guidance YouTube specifies—H.265/HEVC—rather than attempting AV1 HDR based on AV1’s SDR support.
For a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube channel
If the goal is to keep uploaded documentaries or a playlist looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than broadcast a live AV1 encoder output, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the uploaded video without requiring a computer or home connection to remain on. StreamNeo accepts uploads up to 4K 60fps as made, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
