Sometimes—but a 24/7 duration does not, by itself, guarantee ads or trigger a documented special ad schedule. When monetization is enabled for a monetized live stream, YouTube automatically turns on pre-roll and display ads. Mid-rolls are a separate setting: you can choose automatic, scheduled, or manual insertion. Even when an ad opportunity exists, YouTube does not guarantee that an ad will be served to every viewer.
What “automatic ads” means on a livestream
There are three separate stages: monetization is enabled for the stream; YouTube makes an ad opportunity available; and an ad actually serves to a viewer. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on for a monetized channel when monetization is enabled for that live stream. Its live-ad guidance says pre-roll ads run automatically. Neither setting guarantees that each viewer receives an ad.
If a viewer does not receive an ad, they continue watching the livestream. A viewer who does receive one can rejoin when it ends or skip it, where skipping is available. Ad delivery can vary between viewers.
Does being live for 24 hours make YouTube insert ads?
YouTube’s live-monetization guidance does not describe a special rule that makes a stream’s 24/7 duration trigger mid-roll ads, guarantees a particular cadence, or prevents ads. The relevant controls are the stream’s monetization and mid-roll settings. So a continuous stream may have ads enabled, but you should not assume that ads will appear every set number of minutes—or that every viewer will see one.

Choose how to handle live mid-rolls
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the stream’s monetization and mid-roll controls. The three documented approaches offer different balances of control and effort:

YouTube notes that scheduled or manual modes may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode; that is not a guaranteed result for an individual stream. Whichever mode you choose, a configured break or ad slot does not guarantee a paid impression: YouTube’s ad system determines whether an ad serves.

Where to check the settings
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the stream whose settings you want to check.
- Review monetization for that stream. Confirm that the stream is monetized if you want YouTube’s live ad settings enabled.
- Review the mid-roll mode—automatic, scheduled, or manual—and its frequency or interval where applicable.
- Check channel defaults if you are configuring future streams. YouTube documents channel-level defaults for eligible monetized channels without rights management; confirm what applies to the particular stream rather than assuming every stream inherits the same setting.

What YouTube says about automatic mid-roll revenue
YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour. YouTube says this comparison covered 207 countries and was measured in January 2024. It is a platform-reported average, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel, and it is not a finding specifically about 24/7 streams.
