Greater relative video-streaming use was also associated with more frequent YouTube news use; greater relative audio-streaming use was not associated with more podcast news use. The findings show an association, not that streaming causes people to change their news habits.
What the study examined
Antonis Kalogeropoulos and Courtney Tabor’s article, “Streaming the news away? Video and audio streaming entertainment and news use in the United Kingdom and Brazil,” was published online on March 26, 2026, in New Media & Society. It asks whether people who use streaming more than linear television and radio for entertainment also differ in how they encounter and use news. The study concerns both countries; it is not a Brazil-only estimate of broadcast or video consumption. Read the study.
Respondents were asked how often in the previous week they consumed entertainment—such as music, movies, and TV series—from linear sources and streaming services. The researchers compared the reported frequency of streaming with the frequency of linear use. A higher relative-use ratio indicates more streaming use compared with linear use; a lower ratio indicates more linear use.
What respondents said about entertainment use
In the study sample, the mean relative-use measure was 1.19 for video streaming (standard deviation 1.01) and 1.34 for audio streaming (standard deviation 1.15). The authors also grouped respondents by whether they used streaming more, linear media more, or both similarly:

How entertainment preferences related to news use
Traditional TV and radio news
Across the two countries, people with greater relative preference for video and audio streaming entertainment were less likely to use television and radio for news. The reported relationships remained in models that controlled for other factors, but statistical adjustment does not establish that streaming preference caused the lower use of broadcast news.

YouTube and news podcasts
Greater relative video-streaming use was associated with more frequent news use on YouTube. The corresponding pattern did not appear for audio: people with greater relative audio-streaming use did not report greater use of news podcasts. The findings therefore do not support treating video and audio streaming preferences as interchangeable predictors of news-platform use.
Who was more likely to prefer streaming?
Younger age was the strongest and most consistent predictor of preferring streaming to linear video and audio in both countries. Higher education and income were also associated with greater streaming preference in some analyses. The authors summarize the pattern this way: “Young age emerged as the strongest and most consistent predictor of a preference for video and audio streaming, with higher education and higher income additionally associated with a greater streaming preference.”

How to interpret the UK and Brazil results
The researchers used three-wave online panel surveys fielded by Netquest in November and December 2024. The final wave included 1,034 UK respondents and 1,552 Brazilian respondents; the first wave included 1,248 and 1,998, respectively. Reported retention was 82.8% in the UK and 78% in Brazil. Participants came from a non-probability online panel with demographic quotas, and the authors note that older, middle- and higher-income, and more highly educated people were somewhat over-represented.
- The results describe associations among surveyed respondents, not proof that a move to streaming changes anyone’s news use.
- The panel was not a probability sample of either country, so the findings should not be presented as national prevalence estimates.
- The study covers the UK and Brazil; its findings do not automatically apply to other countries or to every streaming service.
Why streaming might matter—and what the survey cannot show
The authors propose that the media environments may help explain the associations. Scheduled broadcasts can expose viewers and listeners to news incidentally, while streaming services offer more user choice and algorithmic curation. These are interpretations of possible mechanisms, not causes isolated by the survey. The study does not establish that algorithms, reduced incidental exposure, or time spent on entertainment produced the observed differences.
