Why the preview suggested Vader killed Watto
On January 24, 2025, James Whitbrook’s Gizmodo/io9 article covered three preview images shared by Marvel Star Wars editor Mark Paniccia. One appeared to show Vader choking Watto on Tatooine. At the time, the images did not explicitly establish who was present or whether the scene depicted an actual event, but the apparent confrontation inspired the headline’s promise of revenge. The emotional logic was clear: Watto had enslaved Anakin Skywalker and his mother, Shmi, on Tatooine. An imagined reckoning with him draws on that history, but it is not proof that Vader acted on it.
What the released issue actually says
Legacy of Vader #2, written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Luke Ross, was released March 12, 2025. In the issue, Kylo Ren imagines Vader returning to the site of Watto’s shop to kill him. Vaneé then clarifies that Vader did not kill Watto. Kylo learns that Gardulla the Hutt was still alive. The Watto reference entry summarizes the issue’s resolution.

That distinction changes the scene’s meaning: the preview’s apparent Vader action is a possibility Kylo pictures, not a confirmed event in the story. The released issue does not give Watto the death the headline seemed to promise.

Legacy of Vader is set between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, as Kylo explores his grandfather’s history. The Tatooine scene connects his search to Anakin’s past, while leaving Vader’s actual treatment of Watto unambiguous: he did not kill him.
