Sony owns Bungie through Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), a wholly owned Sony Group subsidiary. SIE completed its acquisition of all of Bungie’s shares on July 15, 2022. Bungie’s privacy policy, updated June 22, 2026, still describes the studio as wholly owned by SIE and part of PlayStation Studio.
When did Sony buy Bungie, and how much did it pay?
SIE completed the acquisition of 100% of Bungie’s shares on July 15, 2022. Sony’s completion announcement put the total consideration at approximately US$3.7 billion, including the purchase price and committed employee incentives. Sony’s completion announcement and its subsequent quarterly securities filing provide the final figures.
The final reported consideration was ¥510.860 billion (US$3.704 billion). Of that, ¥348.169 billion (US$2.525 billion) was purchase consideration; ¥162.691 billion (US$1.179 billion) was mainly deferred employee payments and retention incentives. Those employee-related amounts are part of the total, not an additional purchase price.
The often-quoted US$3.6 billion figure was the approximate estimate in SIE’s January 31, 2022 agreement announcement, before customary working-capital and other adjustments. It was an initial estimate, rather than the final reported amount. SIE’s agreement announcement

Does Sony ownership mean Bungie is no longer independent?
“Independent” can refer to ownership, creative decision-making, publishing, or a studio’s place in a larger organization. Bungie is not independently owned: it is a Sony subsidiary. But at the time of the January 2022 deal, Bungie said it would continue to independently publish and creatively develop its games. Sony’s 2023 corporate report also described Bungie as maintaining independence and multi-platform operations after the merger.
That operating language does not undo the acquisition or mean Bungie remained a separate owner. Nor does it guarantee that every future game will follow the same publishing or platform approach.

How has Bungie’s relationship with PlayStation changed?
In July 2024, Bungie announced deeper organizational integration with SIE: 155 roles were to move into SIE over the following quarters, and an incubation project was to shift to a new studio within PlayStation Studios. This describes changes to the organization, not a reversal or new date for the acquisition.
Bungie’s current privacy policy, updated June 22, 2026, identifies the company as a wholly owned SIE subsidiary and part of PlayStation Studio. Bungie’s Privacy Policy

Did Bungie become a PlayStation exclusive?
The acquisition-era statements described Bungie’s plans for independent publishing and multi-platform operations; they are not a blanket promise about every future release. Ownership by Sony alone does not establish the platform availability of a particular game. Check the announcement for the specific title and release rather than assuming it is exclusive—or that all future Bungie games will be available on every platform.
Who leads Bungie?
In an August 21, 2025 leadership announcement, Pete Parsons said he was passing leadership, and Bungie named Justin Truman as its new Studio Head. This is a dated leadership update, separate from the question of who owns the studio. Bungie’s leadership announcement

What does Sony’s ownership mean for Destiny 2?
Ownership is distinct from a particular game’s release plans. In a May 21, 2026 post, Bungie said it planned to release Destiny 2’s final live-service content update on June 9, 2026, and intended to keep the game playable. Those are Bungie’s stated plans for Destiny 2; they do not change the ownership facts. Bungie’s Destiny 2 update
