There is no confirmed 2026/27 return for Perth’s double-decker Coastal Explorer bus in the available official information. The service ran as an eight-week trial in January and February 2025, and the operator chose not to extend it, according to WALGA’s 2026 case study. The route and fares below describe the 2024/25 season only; current dates, timetable, tickets and prices have not been established.
Is the Coastal Explorer bus running this summer?
The last documented Coastal Explorer season was summer 2024/25, beginning on 4 January 2025. The City of Joondalup and City of Stirling announced that season in December 2024. WALGA’s 2026 case study later described the service as an eight-week trial in January and February 2025 and reported that the operator chose not to extend it. That history does not confirm service for the 2026/27 summer.
No 2026/27 Coastal Explorer dates, timetable, fares or booking channel are established by those announcements. Check for a new notice from the City of Joondalup or City of Stirling before planning around the bus.
What route did the bus cover in 2024/25?
The historical open-top double-decker service started in Perth CBD, travelled to Scarborough Beach, then followed the coast through Trigg, North Beach, Watermans Bay, Marmion and Sorrento to Hillarys Boat Harbour. The two cities described six hop-on, hop-off round trips each day between Scarborough and Hillarys, before the bus returned to Perth.

What happened after the trial?
WALGA’s 2026 case study says the trial ran for eight weeks in January and February 2025. Ticket sales indicated 800 passengers, and the operator chose not to extend the service. The passenger figure describes the trial’s ticket sales; it does not establish profitability, broader demand or the reason for the operator’s decision.

What’s the alternative for getting to Scarborough?
Transperth describes the free Surf CAT service between Stirling Station and Scarborough Beach, running every 10 minutes every day. It can get you to Scarborough, but the cited information does not show it following the Coastal Explorer’s coast-hopping route onward to Hillarys. Check Transperth’s live service information before travelling.
The two services are not interchangeable for the full coast trip: the historical Coastal Explorer connected Scarborough and Hillarys with coastal stops and offered paid hop-on, hop-off travel; the Surf CAT connects Stirling Station and Scarborough and is free. Current Coastal Explorer availability is unconfirmed.
