Yes. Paul Hogan has said he wants to return to Australia, especially Sydney, to be near his family. But later reporting still placed him in California, where his son Chance’s life was an important reason for staying. The health problems described in the original 2022 story are historical interview reporting, not a current medical update, and the available reports do not confirm that Hogan has moved back permanently.
What did Paul Hogan say about returning to Australia?
In an interview with A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw, reported by PerthNow on November 8, 2022, Hogan said he would ideally rather be back in Sydney because he missed the rest of his family. He also described feeling homesick and spoke warmly about Australia.
The interview explains the headline’s reference to wanting to spend his later years at home: Hogan expressed a wish to return, not an announced move. His words at the time were: “But, yeah, ideally I’d rather be back in Sydney because I miss the rest of my family there.” PerthNow’s November 8, 2022 report covered the interview.
Why was Hogan still living in California?
Hogan said his son Chance was the main reason he remained in the United States. Nine’s A Current Affair report described Chance as having friends, a band and hobbies in the US, and Hogan said he felt he was the only family Chance had there. Hogan joked, “I get Chance to open jars for me.” These remarks present his decision as a family consideration alongside his homesickness, not evidence that he had given up on returning. Nine’s A Current Affair was the interview publisher; the account of Chance’s role is based on its report.

What health problems did the 2022 story describe?
PerthNow’s 2022 account said Hogan had a pacemaker and retroperitoneal fibrosis, which the report described as a benign growth around the abdominal aorta pressing on a kidney. Hogan described treatment for an aorta and kidney problem and said he had lost body fat and muscle and felt feeble. These details were reported from a celebrity interview; they are not independently verified medical findings or an assessment of his health today.
A July 2025 New Idea report quoted Hogan attributing his wheelchair use at Sydney Airport to arthritis and an old knee injury from skateboarding. That is his reported explanation for that occasion; wheelchair use alone does not establish a new diagnosis or a worsening condition. New Idea’s July 2025 coverage also reported that he again wanted to return.

What have later reports said about a return?
In July 2025, New Idea reported that Hogan continued to express a wish to return to Australia. On June 29, 2026, SBS reported that he still lived in California and quoted him saying, “I want to die in Australia — in a multicultural Australia!” The statement makes his preference clear, but it does not establish that he later relocated. SBS’s June 29, 2026 report is the latest residence and return-wish update in the reporting cited here.
