Why is it after the credits?
Co-director David Derrick Jr. said the scene was originally planned as an ending: “Originally It wasn’t an in credit scene. We just had it as an end scene.” The filmmakers wanted the main film to close on Moana and her crew chasing the horizon, then use a pause after the credits begin for a darker glimpse of the villains and a laugh. CinemaBlend’s March 22, 2025 interview with directors Jason Hand and David Derrick Jr. also explains that Tamatoa was difficult to fit into the main story, making his appearance with Nalo a comic character beat.
Does the scene confirm Moana 3?
No. The directors said they wanted Moana’s journey in this film to feel fulfilled. Jason Hand also said Nalo’s continuing threat could be useful “if we choose to go into 3.” That leaves a possible story path open; it is not confirmation that a third film is planned or approved.
