Timothy abandons his plan to poison the Ratliff family, but poison left in an unwashed blender nearly kills Lochlan the next morning. The family survives; what comes next for them financially is left unresolved.
Does Lochlan die in the finale?
No. Lochlan convulses after drinking a protein shake made in the blender Timothy had used for the poisoned cocktails. Timothy finds him and tries to revive him. Lochlan survives and later tells his father that he saw God. Sky identifies “Amor Fati” as the season’s final episode, set on the last day for the Thailand resort’s guests (Sky’s episode page).
What was Timothy’s plan?
Facing financial jeopardy and the possibility of losing the comfortable life his family knows, Timothy contemplates killing himself and his family. He gathers poisonous seeds and prepares piña coladas for the family. Lochlan is left out of the drinks because he is underage. Timothy then panics, knocks the drinks away and claims the coconut milk has gone bad (TVLine’s finale interview and recap; The Hollywood Reporter’s interview with Mike White).
Why does Lochlan drink the poisoned smoothie?
The threat is not over when Timothy abandons the cocktails. The next morning, Lochlan uses the unwashed blender to make a protein shake. Poison residue remains, and he becomes gravely ill. The twist is accidental exposure after Timothy’s deliberate plan has been stopped: the finale does not establish that Timothy deliberately spared Lochlan, only that he kept him out of the drinks because he was underage (TVLine).

Did Timothy really intend to kill his family?
Yes: the poisoned drinks are part of a deliberate plan, not merely a passing thought. But Timothy does not carry it through. He knocks the drinks away, and the later danger to Lochlan comes from the contaminated blender rather than a renewed attempt. The finale makes the distinction important: Timothy’s family survives, but his actions put them at risk even after he backs away from the plan (The Hollywood Reporter).
What does the ending mean for the Ratliffs?
On the boat home, Timothy tells his family that things are about to change and that they will get through it together. Creator Mike White described their conclusion as “a bittersweet ending”: they survive, but must face life without their money and familiar comforts. White also said he does not think Victoria can live in poverty. Those remarks frame the family’s predicament, but they do not settle what happens to them next (TVLine).

What the finale leaves open
- It does not specify the Ratliffs’ later legal or financial outcome.
- Lochlan’s near-death experience is not proof that he permanently changes or joins Piper at the monastery.
- Timothy’s final reassurance signals that the family must face a changed future; it is not evidence that he has solved their financial crisis.
How Rick’s story echoes the Ratliff ending
The parallel is thematic, not a literal explanation for Timothy’s choices. Rick kills Jim after a confrontation, then learns from Sritala that Jim was his father. Chelsea dies in the violence that follows, and Gaitok shoots Rick. White described Rick’s arc as a Greek-tragedy pattern: “it’s a classic theme of Greek tragedy: somebody killing the thing that they love trying to get some revenge.” That idea of destructive choices and their consequences provides a contrast to Timothy, who stops before completing his plan but cannot undo the danger he has already set in motion (TVLine).
