Does Linode Charge for Outbound Bandwidth on a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

Yes. A Linode Compute instance sending a 24/7 stream to YouTube uses outbound network transfer. That traffic counts toward the applicable transfer allowance; if the account’s monthly pool is exceeded, overage charges may apply. The current surfaced Akamai/Linode policy lists region-dependent overage rates of $0.005 to $0.015 per GB, but your exact rate and included allowance depend on the data center and account. Check Cloud Manager before estimating your bill.

What Linode counts as outbound transfer

When a server pushes video to YouTube, data is leaving the Linode environment. Linode’s Network Transfer Usage and Costs documentation classifies metered transfer as outbound data sent from Compute Instances and NodeBalancers to destinations outside the origin data center, over IPv4 and IPv6.

This is a volume-billing question, not a network-speed question: an advertised network speed does not tell you how much data a continuous stream will send during a month. The stream’s sustained bitrate is the main input for estimating its transfer volume.

How much transfer a 24/7 stream can use

For a constant bitrate, a useful decimal estimate for 30 days is:

Average bitrate in Mbps × 324 ≈ GB transferred in 30 days

Average bitrate Approximate transfer over 30 days
1 Mbps 324 GB
2 Mbps 648 GB
4 Mbps 1,296 GB (about 1.3 TB)

These figures are arithmetic estimates for an uninterrupted, constant-rate stream—not measurements of YouTube or Linode usage. Add headroom for bitrate variation, reconnects, protocol overhead, and other outbound traffic. Linode staff have discussed bitrate-driven transfer use for a 24/7 media-server workload, but that historical anecdote is not a current benchmark or a YouTube-specific measurement.

How the allowance and overage bill work

The applicable transfer allowance may be pooled across services on the account. That means other active services can use part of the available monthly transfer; do not assume a single instance’s allowance is the whole account’s headroom. Linode staff guidance also says excess transfer is billed rather than automatically stopping outbound traffic.

The current surfaced policy lists the following overage rates for transfer beyond the applicable monthly allotment:

Data-center region Policy-listed overage rate
Most listed data centers $0.005 per GB
São Paulo $0.007 per GB
Jakarta $0.015 per GB

These are source-reported policy rates accessed in 2026, not a guaranteed quote for every account or location. Data-center coverage and prices can change, and the plan and region for a particular instance determine what applies. Older community replies cite different rates; they are historical and should not be used in place of the current policy and account details.

Check your likely cost before streaming

  1. Find the actual sustained bitrate. Use the bitrate configured for the stream or inspect the outgoing stream during representative playback. If it varies, estimate using a realistic average rather than the peak alone.
  2. Estimate 30-day transfer. Multiply the average Mbps by 324, then allow extra for overhead, reconnects, and other outbound services.
  3. Check the account’s transfer pool and usage in Cloud Manager. Confirm the current included amount and consumed transfer for the account; pooled usage can include services other than the streaming instance.
  4. Confirm the data-center overage rate and plan allowance. Use current Linode pricing or the account’s billing view for the instance’s region rather than relying on a generic allowance or old community answer.
  5. Estimate only the amount above the remaining pool. Multiply that excess by the applicable regional rate. The result is a planning estimate, not a bill guarantee.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a 24/7 YouTube stream without keeping a Linode instance and its outbound transfer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required; one free day is available per account.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists and 24/7 looping, and StreamNeo team support. The same features apply across plans; only the billing length changes. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
