Does ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ Get Caught in Its Own Celebrity Web?

Jennifer Lopez’s star image is woven into the fantasy at the heart of Bill Condon’s film. The real question is whether that glamour reveals Molina’s inner life or draws attention from the prison story.

Jennifer Lopez’s star power is not separate from Kiss of the Spider Woman’s story: it is part of the mechanism. Lopez plays Ingrid Luna, a fictional screen diva in the movie Molina imagines while sharing an Argentine prison cell with political prisoner Valentín. That makes the film’s central tension unusually visible: does Hollywood glamour illuminate Molina’s inner life, or pull attention away from the two men and the political, queer story around them?

Why celebrity is built into the story

Bill Condon’s 2025 musical drama adapts Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel and the Broadway musical by Terrence McNally, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. It is distinct from the 1985 screen adaptation. In the new film, Molina recounts his favorite movie to Valentín: a fantasy musical starring Ingrid Luna, played by Lopez. The distributor’s production notes describe the cellmates’ initial differences and the bond that develops between them.

There are two kinds of celebrity at work. Ingrid Luna is a star inside Molina’s story, while Lopez brings her own public image to the role. That casting can make the fantasy feel vivid and deliberately glamorous; it can also invite viewers to recognize Lopez rather than see Molina’s imagined diva as a character in her own right. The question is not simply whether the movie contains spectacle, but what that spectacle does for the prison story.

How the prison story and musical fantasy need each other

The two modes create a useful critical test. The fantasy should reveal something about Molina—his desires, imagination, and way of understanding the world—while the cell scenes give that fantasy political and emotional stakes. If the musical becomes the main attraction without deepening our sense of Molina or his relationship with Valentín, it risks displacing the story that gives it meaning.

Kiss of the Spider Woman - 4K UHD + Blu-ray
  • Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical
  • Directed by Bill Condon
  • Starring Diego Luna, Tonatiuh, and Jennifer Lopez
  • Attention: Notice whether the prison narrative remains the emotional anchor, or whether the imagined film takes over the viewer’s interest.
  • Character: Ask whether Ingrid Luna’s glamour tells us more about Molina’s inner life, rather than simply displaying a star performance.
  • Representation: Consider how the fantasy’s treatment of gender and queer identity connects to the cellmates’ lives instead of functioning as an escape from them.
  • Political context: See whether spectacle sharpens the contrast with imprisonment and state violence, or softens the film’s engagement with them.

Sundance Institute describes the film as set in 1981 and weaving together Argentina’s Dirty War, old Hollywood studio history, trans rights, and a love story. Those are the festival’s descriptions of the film’s intended mixture, not proof that the final balance succeeds. Sundance also identifies 11 musical numbers. Their number alone cannot tell us whether they deepen the drama or overwhelm it.

What Lopez’s casting changes—and what it cannot settle

Lopez’s presence makes the celebrity question hard to ignore, but it does not answer it. A familiar star can be an effective choice for a fantasy built around movie glamour: Ingrid Luna needs to register as a screen idol in Molina’s imagination. At the same time, the casting can make the film’s own fascination with fame part of the viewing experience. The key issue is whether that recognition serves Molina’s fantasy and the bond between the cellmates, or competes with them.

At the Sundance premiere, the Associated Press reported Lopez saying, “I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life.” That remark records her excitement about the project; it does not establish how the film handles its themes. Condon, speaking before the Sundance screening, described the work as “the attempt to bridge the incredible differences that separate us so often.” The aspiration points toward the relationship at the film’s center, but the film itself has to make that bridge convincing.

What the production context adds

The film premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Vanity Fair reported that it was financed, cast, shot, and edited in about a year before that premiere—a reported production timeline, not an independently audited figure. Condon also told Vanity Fair, “This feels like a unicorn movie to me. It’s very hard to actually distill and describe.” The unusual combination of prison drama and old-Hollywood fantasy helps explain that characterization, but novelty alone is not a measure of success.

The Directors Guild of America reported that Condon discussed the challenge of shooting many scenes in the same prison cell. That constraint makes visual contrast between confinement and fantasy a consequential craft choice. It does not, by itself, establish how successfully the finished film distinguishes those worlds.

What can be said about the film’s verdict

The available facts establish that celebrity is central to the design: Molina tells a story about a fictional movie star, and that star is played by one of the film’s most recognizable performers. They also establish a prison frame and a stated ambition to bring political history, trans rights, glamour, and a love story together. They do not settle whether the spectacle serves or eclipses the political and queer dimensions. That judgment depends on how the finished film allocates attention between the fantasy and the cellmates—and on whether Ingrid Luna feels like Molina’s creation rather than simply an occasion for star recognition.

The distributor’s production notes give the film a runtime of 128 minutes and a U.S. theatrical release date of October 10, 2025. Current streaming or rental availability is not established here.
