Disney’s retractable lightsaber looked unusually convincing because its illuminated blade visibly extended from the hilt and could retract again—not because the prop was turned to hide or reveal a fixed blade. A Disney patent describes the mechanism, but the available sources do not establish that the showcased prop is for sale. It is also separate from the paid Savi’s Workshop lightsaber-building experience.
Why the 2021 reveal looked different
On May 4, 2021, Disney Parks teased the device in a 13-second video. Contemporary coverage described a blade extending from the hilt without the familiar trick of turning the prop upside down, and connected the demonstration to the then-upcoming Galactic Starcruiser experience. TechRadar’s report documents that reveal; it does not document a retail launch.
The visual distinction is straightforward: the blade appears to emerge from the handle, making deployment itself part of the effect. That is a more movie-like presentation than a prop with a fixed or externally attached blade, though the teaser alone does not establish how the device performs outside the brief demonstration.
How the retractable blade is designed to work
Disney Enterprises’ patent, “Sword device with retractable, internally illuminated blade”, names Lanny S. Smoot among its inventors. It describes two long plastic blade-body members, each shaped as a half-cylinder, wound inside the hilt. A flexible strip of light sources is attached near the blade’s end cap.

- FULLY RETRACTABLE BLADE: All 4 segments of the blade collapse into the hilt for easy and portable play (approximately 11 inches retracted, 28 cm)
- Deployment: The two blade members spool out of the hilt and form a tube around the flexible light strip.
- Illumination: The strip extends with the blade. A diffuser is intended to blend its individual light sources into a continuous-looking illuminated line.
- Retraction: The mechanism reverses, drawing both the blade members and light strip back into the hilt.
The patent describes the goal as a blade with a more uniform width and continuous illumination than the telescoping designs it discusses. That is the patent’s design rationale, not an independent performance comparison or proof of how well a finished prop works. The patent calls its objective “a more aesthetically correct (relative to movie depictions) energy sword than prior lightsaber products and designs.” It describes an illuminated special-effects device—not a real energy blade.
Can you buy Disney’s retractable lightsaber?
The sources available do not establish that the specific retractable prop shown in 2021 is sold to the public. The patent and teaser do not confirm a current retail listing, price, production quantity, or purchase channel. They also do not establish the prop’s current operating status, durability, or safety specifications.

Consumer lightsabers are a separate category. Hasbro’s 2024 lookbook describes a toy lightsaber with an extendable glowing blade, but that does not verify a specific model’s current stock, price, or mechanism. Treat such toys as alternatives, not as the Disney teaser prop; check a live product page for current availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it the same as a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber?
No. Savi’s Workshop is a separate, paid experience at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge where guests build a custom hilt and connect it to a blade. Walt Disney World currently lists the experience at $274.99 plus tax, including a 31-inch blade and carrying case. The page says one lightsaber is allowed per builder, recommends a minimum age of five, requires park admission, and advises advance reservations. Price and offerings can change. See Walt Disney World’s current Savi’s Workshop details.

On October 5, 2026, Disney announced upgraded Savi’s Workshop chassis and blades at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort. The listed effects include thermal cutting, spinning and deflection, along with smoother blade activation and upgraded audio. These are updates to the separate workshop experience, not evidence that the retractable prop has become a retail product. Disney Parks Blog’s announcement describes the update.
