Which “Despacito” recording features Justin Bieber?
It is “Despacito (feat. Justin Bieber) [Remix],” credited to Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Bieber. The remix was released on April 17, 2017, according to Univision and its Apple Music catalog listing.
The original “Despacito” is by Fonsi and Daddy Yankee; Bieber appears on the remix, not the original recording.
What does Bieber sing in Spanish?
Bieber starts the remix with a new verse in English and sings the chorus in Spanish. The arrangement keeps the original’s reggaeton beat and retains verses by Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, as described by PBS’s American Experience.

How did Bieber join the remix?
Fonsi said Bieber heard “Despacito” while touring in Colombia and asked to record a remix. In an interview with Official Charts, Fonsi said Bieber wrote a new verse and sang the chorus in Spanish. Fonsi viewed the contribution positively, saying it helped take the song to a different level and opened doors for him and Daddy Yankee.
Why did the remix prompt debate?
The response was mixed. PBS’s American Experience describes praise for Bieber’s effort alongside criticism about the cultural implications of a global star performing a Spanish-language hit. Petra R. Rivera-Rideau, an assistant professor of American Studies at Wellesley College, wrote for PBS: “Just as it’s possible to sing a Spanish song without speaking the language, it’s possible to play (and play and play) a Spanish song without embracing the culture that created it.” That is her critique, not a consensus view.
