Spoilers for the entire film and the Broadway musical ending.
No. Elphaba survives the apparent melting: she slips through a trapdoor, then escapes Oz with Fiyero, who has become the Scarecrow. Glinda believes her friend is dead. The film’s final image—a flutter of pages in the Grimmerie—hints at a connection between them but does not confirm that Glinda knows Elphaba survived or that they meet again.
Does Elphaba die in Wicked: For Good?
No. Dorothy throws water on Elphaba, and the people watching believe she has melted. Glinda finds Elphaba’s hat and the green elixir associated with her mother, apparently confirming the death. The audience later learns that Elphaba used a trapdoor to escape the scene alive. TIME’s ending breakdown describes the apparent death as a staged escape, not a real one.
What happens to Elphaba and Fiyero?
After Elphaba and Glinda reconcile and sing “For Good,” Elphaba tells Glinda to hide while she surrenders. She is trying to shield Glinda from the consequences of being connected to the woman Oz has branded wicked. Once the apparent melting convinces the crowd that Elphaba is gone, Scarecrow Fiyero finds her. The two leave together, beyond Oz.

Fiyero is the Scarecrow because Elphaba transformed him to protect him. His arrival confirms that he survived, too, and makes the escape possible.
Does Glinda know Elphaba is alive?
Not when the film ends. Glinda believes Elphaba has died, while viewers have seen that she escaped. That difference keeps the farewell painful even though Elphaba and Fiyero are safe: Glinda has to make her choices without knowing that her friend is alive.

Grieving, Glinda returns to the Emerald City and acts against the people who helped persecute Elphaba. She tells the Wizard that he is Elphaba’s father and orders him to leave; she has Madame Morrible arrested and takes responsibility for Oz, including working to restore the persecuted Animals. Her public identity as “Good” becomes a commitment expressed through action.
What does the Grimmerie mean at the end?
In the final beat, Glinda looks out from the Emerald City palace balcony, where she has placed the Grimmerie. Its pages flutter. One possible reading is that Elphaba, alive beyond Oz, is reaching toward Glinda. Another is that the book responds to Glinda’s own growing capacity for magic as she begins to lead.

The film leaves both readings open. It shows no written message, confirmation that Glinda understands the sign, or reunion between the friends. The flutter is a hopeful suggestion, not proof that Elphaba has contacted her.

The film follows the musical’s broad second-act trajectory but changes what the audience learns and adds a final ambiguity. TIME contrasts the musical’s close—in which Glinda believes the people closest to her are dead—with the film’s reveal that Elphaba escaped and the extra image of the Grimmerie moving.

The film’s broader character framing is also captured by producer Marc Platt in Peacock’s official guide: “The first tells how Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and the second tells how her best friend, Glinda, becomes authentically good.” The twist supports that arc: Elphaba gets a future beyond Oz, while Glinda must decide what goodness means in the world she remains to lead.
