Elon Musk has publicly described video games as a major recreational activity, and reporting has documented him streaming and playing games including Diablo, Diablo IV, and Path of Exile 2. His claims about high rankings need a qualification: he later acknowledged account boosting in Diablo IV and Path of Exile 2.
What games has Elon Musk played?
The clearest recent examples are from the Diablo series and Path of Exile 2. In a November 2024 interview, Musk discussed playing Diablo IV and claimed a high rank; the transcript also records his recollection that he had once been among the world’s best Quake players. Those ranking statements are his own claims, not independently verified results. The Joe Rogan Experience transcript captures the interview.
In January 2024, Fortune reported that Musk livestreamed himself playing Diablo for three hours while talking about X and Starlink. Later reporting covered streams of Path of Exile 2 as well as the scrutiny around his apparent gameplay. Fortune’s report and The Washington Post’s January 2025 investigation describe those episodes.
Why does he say he plays?
Musk has said that challenging games help him focus and feel calm. In a 2023 conversation with Lex Fridman, he called video games his “primary recreational activity” and described difficult games as a way to enter a satisfying state of flow. In November 2024, he similarly said that playing on extreme difficulty requires full concentration and has a calming effect. The Lex Fridman Podcast #400 transcript and the Joe Rogan transcript record those comments.

What should be understood about his rankings?
Playing and streaming are supported by Musk’s statements and reporting. A high leaderboard position is a separate matter: in January 2025, Musk acknowledged account boosting in Diablo IV and Path of Exile 2. PC Gamer reported that he also said gameplay he posted or streamed was personally played by him. That does not establish that every ranking or progression milestone was earned without help. PC Gamer’s account and The Washington Post’s investigation cover the distinction.
