Changing your X profile photo can temporarily hide your blue checkmark while X reviews your account. It does not automatically cancel your X Premium subscription or permanently revoke the checkmark. The rule applies to profile-photo changes generally—not just to NFT avatars.
What happens when you change your profile photo?
X says a change to your profile photo, display name, or username causes the blue checkmark to disappear until the account is reconfirmed as meeting its requirements. X describes this as a review, not as cancellation of Premium. The review may take several business days, and X may temporarily restrict further profile changes while it is underway. X does not promise a fixed restoration time, so do not rely on claims that the badge will return within a particular number of hours.
Is the rule specific to NFT profile pictures?
No. X’s stated rule covers profile-photo changes, without a separate NFT exception. Replacing an NFT avatar with a regular image can trigger the review, as can switching between ordinary images. X’s FAQ names the profile photo, display name, and username as review triggers. It does not clearly establish that changing only the banner or editing the bio triggers the same process.

Why NFT avatars were associated with the checkmark
When the feature was available, Twitter Blue subscribers could connect a crypto wallet and display eligible Ethereum NFTs using a distinctive hexagonal profile image. The feature supported ERC-721 and ERC-1155 tokens; viewers could inspect details such as the collection, contract address, token ID, and minting application. The unusual hexagonal frame made NFT avatars visually distinctive, but it did not make the checkmark an NFT-ownership badge. The two features should not be conflated.

Can you set up a new NFT profile picture on X?
New NFT profile-picture setup is no longer supported, according to reporting published on January 10, 2024, when X removed the ability for paid subscribers to set an NFT as their profile picture and removed the feature descriptions from its Premium support page. TechCrunch

Some previously configured NFT avatars reportedly remained visible in hexagonal form after the change. X did not clearly publish a complete policy for existing displays, so a legacy hexagonal avatar should not be treated as proof that new setup is available or that X currently confirms NFT ownership. What the blue checkmark means now
X currently says a blue checkmark indicates that an account has an active X Premium subscription and meets the platform’s eligibility requirements. The mark alone is not the old Twitter-era signal that an account was notable, authentic, and active. X’s profile-label guidance

What to do if the checkmark does not return
- Stop making profile changes for now. Another change to the photo, display name, or username can prompt further review.
- Check your subscription status. A missing checkmark alone does not establish that Premium was canceled.
- Allow for the review period. X says review may take several business days, but does not guarantee an exact completion time.
- Look for account notices. Check for suspension, enforcement, impersonation, or other eligibility issues that could affect the mark.
- Contact X Premium support if it remains missing. Note when you made the change and what you changed so you can explain the sequence. X Premium FAQ
If you canceled Premium, X says the checkmark generally remains until the paid term ends, unless it is removed for another reason. A badge missing immediately after a profile-photo change is therefore not, on its own, evidence that the subscription ended. X Premium FAQ
