There is no substantiated public record here of a broader history of joke theft by Cedric the Entertainer. The sources reviewed document one prominent, unresolved dispute: Katt Williams says Cedric reused a joke Williams had performed earlier; Cedric denies the allegation. The available reporting does not conclusively establish who originated the bit.
What did Katt Williams accuse Cedric the Entertainer of?
Williams says he performed a convertible-driving joke on BET’s ComicView in 1998, when he appeared as Katt ‘N Da Hatt, and that Cedric used it as the closing joke in the 2000 film The Original Kings of Comedy. Williams described his bit as involving someone driving a convertible while playing music loudly; he said Cedric’s version changed the car into a spaceship.

Those details are Williams’s account, as reported by the Los Angeles Times and Entertainment Tonight. Williams also said comedian Mark Curry helped write the bit, that he performed it twice on ComicView, and that the network used it in commercials. The sources do not independently verify those parts of his account.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Williams first made the accusation publicly in 2021 and renewed it during his 2024 interview on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay. Williams said Cedric had watched him perform, praised the joke backstage, and later used it. He also claimed Cedric and Steve Harvey had apologized. These are Williams’s assertions, not established findings.

What has Cedric said in response?
His 2021 denial
In 2021, Cedric denied Williams’s claim. As reported by TV One, Cedric said the material had roots in his own act and that he performed it six or seven years before the 1998 performance Williams described. He also said, “I have no idea what he’s talking about,” and said he had not seen Williams do the space-shuttle version. That is Cedric’s competing account; it does not independently prove when he first performed the material.
His response after the 2024 interview
After Williams revived the allegation in January 2024, Cedric described it as “Revisionist History” in an Instagram comment. At the Golden Globes, he told Entertainment Tonight that people online were repeating claims that were not factual. His comments rejected Williams’s version of events.
His 2025 comments
In a 2025 interview on Deon Cole’s Funny Knowing You podcast, reported by Hot 97, Cedric again said he did not accept the accusation. He discussed how comedians can share cultural influences and arrive at similar ideas, and said Williams had not raised the matter with him privately despite their seeing one another over the years.
Does the available evidence prove who wrote the joke?
No. The Los Angeles Times reported that a grainy recording of Williams’s ComicView performance circulated after the 2024 interview and that a side-by-side comparison drew online attention. A recording can help viewers compare the performances and assess their similarity, but similarity alone does not establish copying, intent, authorship, or which performer used the material first.

- One of the country's hottest comedians, Katt Williams is back in his highly-anticipated theatrical comedy. Williams takes a hilarious road trip reminiscent of the Blues Brothers. When he goes to Hollywood he is pitched to star in some of the industry's biggest films but decides he has to return to Chicago and his comedy roots. The sources reviewed do not report a court ruling or independent adjudication resolving the dispute. What is established—and what is not?
| Question | What the sources establish |
|---|---|
| Did Williams accuse Cedric? | Yes. Williams publicly described the alleged reuse and renewed the claim in 2024, according to the Los Angeles Times. |
| Did Cedric respond? | Yes. He denied the allegation in 2021 and rejected it again in 2024 and 2025, according to TV One, Entertainment Tonight, and Hot 97. |
| Is there a reported earlier performance by Williams? | Williams says he performed the joke on ComicView in 1998. The Los Angeles Times reported that a recording circulated, but the sources do not establish the complete chronology independently. |
| Has a broader pattern of joke theft by Cedric been substantiated? | No broader pattern is substantiated by the sources reviewed. |
| Has an independent ruling resolved who originated the bit? | No ruling or independent adjudication is reported in the sources reviewed. |
How should viewers interpret the competing accounts?
Keep the claims attributed: Williams says the joke was his and that Cedric reused it; Cedric says the allegation is wrong and that he performed related material earlier. The reported chronology and available clip are relevant evidence to consider, but they do not by themselves settle authorship or establish a pattern. The fair conclusion is that this is a documented accusation and denial, not a proven case of joke theft or evidence of a broader history.
