The film’s anchor-being explanation and its use of Wolverine variants answer two of the biggest apparent continuity problems, while some details remain unresolved rather than confirmed canon.
Is Deadpool & Wolverine set in the Avengers’ main timeline?
The film brings Deadpool into Marvel Studios’ wider storytelling through the multiverse and the TVA. That connection does not make the histories of the Fox X-Men films and the Avengers films one seamless chronology. Marvel’s discussion of Deadpool’s place in the MCU describes an integration, not a wholesale rewrite of every earlier film’s continuity. Kevin Feige on Deadpool’s place in the MCU

Director Shawn Levy described the story as “ultimately a story about two people trying to make their way in the Multiverse.” The writers also said they drew on the TVA, the Void and variants, with Loki as their main reference point. Those are the story’s tools for letting characters and realities intersect; they are not proof that every earlier X-Men or Avengers event belongs to the same timeline. Levy’s interview with Disney · The screenwriters on variants and multiverses
How can Wolverine appear after Logan?
The Wolverine who joins Deadpool is a variant, not a resurrection of the Wolverine who dies in Logan. A variant can share the character’s identity and appearance while belonging to a different reality and having a different history. The film’s multiverse framework therefore lets Hugh Jackman play Wolverine again without undoing Logan’s ending.

- Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake yet. His days as Deadpool behind him, a listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. But when his homeworld is threatened, he reluctantly suits up as he tries to convince Wolverine? oh hell, just watch. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Screenwriter Rhett Reese explained that variants and multiverses helped the writers move between realities and return to a shared timeline for the story. That describes the narrative device; it does not mean that Logan’s events are erased. The Credits interview with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick
Why does Wolverine’s death put Deadpool’s world at risk?
Within the film, Logan’s Wolverine is treated as an anchor being for Earth-10005. After his death, that world begins to deteriorate, giving the TVA’s intervention and Deadpool’s search for another Wolverine their stakes. This is the movie’s explanation for the danger to Deadpool’s reality.

It is safer to treat “anchor being” as an in-story rule for this plot, not as a settled law that governs every Marvel universe. The film’s premise explains why Earth-10005 is in trouble; it does not establish that every reality must have the same kind of anchor or suffer the same consequences when one dies.
Is Iron Man the Avengers’ anchor being?
That is a fan theory, not a confirmed answer in the cited material. In a July 2024 report, Feige was asked about the idea that Iron Man anchors the MCU. His response acknowledged the question but did not establish Iron Man as canonically serving that role. ComicBook.com’s report on Feige and the anchor-being theory

- Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprise their roles as Deadpool and Wolverine in this superhero action adventure sequel directed by Shawn Levy.
Unless later primary canon confirms it, the claim should remain speculation. The film’s explanation for Earth-10005 cannot by itself prove who, if anyone, anchors the Avengers’ reality.
Does the movie explain every X-Men timeline inconsistency?
No definitive, scene-by-scene reconciliation of every earlier X-Men film detail is established by the cited filmmaker comments. The multiverse framework provides a way for different versions and histories to coexist, but it does not automatically answer every question about how a particular Fox-era event fits.

A useful way to assess a supposed plot hole is to separate four kinds of claims:
- Shown or stated in the film: direct events and dialogue are the strongest basis for describing what the story establishes.
- Multiverse explanation: a different version or reality may account for a changed character history, but should not be presented as proof about every continuity detail.
- In-story rule: the anchor-being premise explains the threat to Earth-10005; it is not automatically a franchise-wide rule.
- Unconfirmed theory: claims such as Iron Man anchoring the MCU remain speculation unless canon confirms them.
Can you follow the story without prior X-Men or Avengers homework?
Levy said the film was made to be entertaining without an obligation to arrive prepared with prior franchise knowledge, while still respecting devoted fans. That makes it possible to follow the central story without resolving every continuity question. Familiarity with earlier films may add references and context, but it is not the same as a complete explanation of every timeline. The Associated Press interview with Shawn Levy

What is a plot hole here—and what is left open?
Calling a continuity question a “plot hole” does not make it a proven contradiction. The film supplies a multiverse framework, a variant Wolverine and an anchor-being explanation for Earth-10005. Those elements address the central Avengers-and-X-Men concerns without asserting that every prior film shares a single history.
Where the movie or its creators do not provide a specific reconciliation, the accurate answer is that the detail remains open. A plausible fan interpretation may help connect the films, but it should not be mistaken for confirmed canon.
