The worldwide totals
The Numbers, the box-office database, lists the following worldwide grosses. Box-office totals are revised as reporting catches up, so each figure below carries the date it was read.

Why “double” does not hold
For Fire and Ash to double the comparator, the comparator would need to have grossed roughly $745 million worldwide, half of Fire and Ash‘s total. The Force Awakens grossed about 1.38 times as much as Fire and Ash, so the relationship runs the other way. The gap is not a rounding issue: it is roughly $566 million in the opposite direction.
What “greatest” would have to mean
The headline does not name a film, a genre rule, or a measure. Each reading below produces a different answer, and the headline’s wording does not say which one it intends.

Highest worldwide gross
If “greatest” means biggest earner, the comparison is the worldwide nominal total in the table above. Under that reading, The Force Awakens is the stronger comparator, and Fire and Ash is not double its gross.
The ten-year window
“From the last 10 years” depends on a cutoff date. Counted back from the December 2025 release of Fire and Ash, the window opens around December 2015, the month The Force Awakens was released. A writer who counts from a different date, or excludes films released in that opening month, would get a different candidate list. A fact-check should state the window it uses rather than assume it.

Critical acclaim or another measure
If the author meant critical reception, audience scores or some other standard, the box-office claim does not test it at all. Such a headline would need a named critics’ aggregate or a named award, and neither is supplied by the sources used here.
Inflation-adjusted receipts

Guinness and the general sequel record
Guinness World Records identifies Avengers: Endgame as the highest-grossing movie sequel overall, citing $2,797,800,564 as of 1 April 2020 according to The Numbers. That is a general record across all genres and eras. It does not answer a science-fiction question, and because the figure is dated 2020, it is not a current total.
Milestone and opening figures
Studio announcements and opening estimates are sometimes quoted alongside database totals. They measure different things and should not be mixed.

- Disney milestone, $1.083 billion. The Walt Disney Company announced that Fire and Ash had passed $1 billion globally, with $306 million domestic and $777.1 million international at that point. It is a dated milestone snapshot, not the current chart total. Disney’s own wording was that the studio announced on a Sunday that 20th Century Studios’ Avatar: Fire and Ash had “officially surpassed $1 billion at the global box office.”
- Disney opening estimate, $347.1 million. Disney estimated the global opening weekend at $347.1 million, and said premium formats delivered 66% of domestic opening weekend gross and that 3D showtimes contributed 56%.
- AP opening estimate, $345 million. The Associated Press, reporting on 21 December 2025, cited a studio-estimated global opening of $345 million, with $88 million domestic and $257 million international. AP also reported that Avatar: The Way of Water opened to $435 million globally in 2022.
The two opening figures differ slightly, which is normal for estimates made before final weekend reporting. Attribute each one to its source and call both estimates. Neither figure bears on the doubling claim, which concerns cumulative gross.

A claim that the film “doubles” the comparator’s gross is wrong on current worldwide totals. An accurate version would name the comparator, the measure and the window. For example: “Avatar: Fire and Ash has grossed about 72% of Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘s worldwide total, according to The Numbers on 8 October 2026.” If the author wants to call The Force Awakens the greatest science-fiction sequel of the decade, the article should say that the claim rests on box-office gross and state the window it covers.
