Possibly, but a drive swap alone is not enough to predict a noticeable change in your electricity bill. An SSD may use less power than a rotational hard drive, but the relevant figure is the whole PC’s power draw while it plays YouTube. No controlled whole-PC comparison establishes how much that draw changes when only the drive changes. Measure your own setup if you need a reliable estimate.
Why a drive’s power use is not the PC’s electricity cost
Microsoft’s Windows Server hardware guidance says that “SSD drives are more power efficient than rotational drives.” That is a general direction, not a measured saving for a consumer PC looping YouTube. The drive is only one component; the rest of the computer, playback conditions and network activity also contribute to the system’s draw at the wall. A drive’s idle or read/write power figure is not the same as the computer’s average power during playback. For example, SanDisk Support publishes these generic theoretical ranges for internal SSDs. They are not readings for specific SanDisk products, do not compare SSDs with HDDs, and do not represent a whole PC playing YouTube:

SanDisk says the figures are generic expectations, not power-consumption data for its own products. Its page was published on 2024-10-23 and updated on 2026-05-31. What can change YouTube playback power
The video quality selected and actually played matters to the conditions you are measuring. YouTube says quality can depend on connection speed, player or screen size, the quality of the uploaded source, and browser support; on a computer, viewers can manually select video quality. Its system-requirements guidance also notes that some movies, shows and live streams need more processing power, and recommends higher sustained connection speeds for higher resolutions. These are playback considerations, not a published estimate of electricity use. For an SSD-versus-HDD comparison, keep the same computer and playback setup as far as possible. If you compare two different PCs, differences in their other hardware and settings prevent you from attributing a power difference to storage alone.

Estimate your own recurring cost
- Measure the whole PC at the wall. Use a plug-in meter that reports energy or power, and measure during representative YouTube playback. A drive specification alone cannot provide this reading.
- Keep playback conditions consistent. Use the same video, manually selected resolution, browser, display configuration and computer settings. Let playback settle, then record average whole-PC watts over a representative period. YouTube’s quality and processing guidance explains why these conditions matter.
- Convert watts and hours to energy. Use kWh = average watts Ă— hours Ă· 1,000. For example, if your measured average is W watts and the PC runs H hours, energy is W Ă— H Ă· 1,000 kWh. Substitute your measured values; this is a formula, not a typical PC result.
- Apply your electricity rate. Multiply the resulting kWh by your actual local price per kWh. For a recurring daily or yearly estimate, use the corresponding playback hours and your own rate; tariffs and usage vary by location.
- To compare drives, repeat the measurement. Use the same PC, video, resolution, browser, display and settings, changing only the drive where possible. Compare the measured averages and treat the result as specific to that machine and test—not as a universal SSD saving.
A plug-in meter can make the estimate more useful, but no particular meter model or accuracy is established here. Also note whether the drive is mostly idle or actively handling data: idle and read/write specifications describe different operating conditions.
Should you buy an SSD to reduce the loop’s bill?
Not on this evidence alone. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is one relevant storage category, but the generic SSD figures do not establish the likely whole-PC saving, payback period or even the size of a bill difference for your setup. Choose an SSD for other reasons that matter to you, such as storage performance or system responsiveness, rather than assuming it will materially lower the cost of a YouTube loop. A playback problem is not, by itself, evidence that the storage drive is changing the electricity cost. YouTube identifies connection speed, screen or player size, source quality and browser support as factors in video quality. Check those conditions before drawing conclusions from a power comparison.
