Al Pacino has Italian and Sicilian roots, but by his own accounts he did not learn Italian at home and does not speak it conversationally. He has used brief phrases and performed some Italian, but his role as Michael Corleone is not evidence that he is fluent.
What has Al Pacino said about speaking Italian?
In a 2015 interview with L’Espresso, Pacino explained that Italian was spoken at home when adults did not want him to understand. He added that he wished he had learned it—and other languages. Read the interview in L’Espresso.
“In casa, le sole volte in cui si parlava italiano era quando non volevano che capissi! Mi sarebbe piaciuto impararlo, e mi sarebbe piaciuto imparare altre lingue.”
In 2020, Il Tirreno quoted him saying, “Non so l’italiano”—“I don’t know Italian.” The profile also connected his family roots to grandparents from Messina and Palermo. Read the profile in Il Tirreno.

Does his Italian heritage mean he speaks the language?
No. Pacino has described himself as Italian and Sicilian, but identity and ancestry do not establish language fluency. In a 2024 first-person account about The Godfather, he wrote, “I am a kid from the South Bronx. I am an Italian. I am a Sicilian too.” That speaks to his sense of heritage, not his ability to hold a conversation in Italian. Read his Guardian account.
What about the Italian he has spoken in public or on screen?
There are accounts of Pacino using some Italian, but they point to brief or performed speech rather than conversational fluency. At the 2014 Venice Film Festival, la Repubblica reported that he apologized for knowing only “buonasera” and “arrivederci”—“good evening” and “goodbye.” Read the Venice report.
TIME reported that he delivered an impromptu festival monologue, some of it in Italian. A 2011 red-carpet exchange is also described by Distractify, which quotes him joking, “I can speak double-talk Italian.” That account is secondary reporting of a video, so it is best treated as a reported quip rather than proof of his language ability. Read TIME’s festival report and Distractify’s account of the RAI exchange.

No. Pacino played Michael Corleone in The Godfather (1972), The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1990), according to his Golden Globes biography. Delivering prepared dialogue in a film is different from understanding and speaking spontaneously in everyday situations. The films show his performance as an actor, not that he is fluent in Italian.
