Capturing Bigfoot, a 2026 documentary directed by Marq Evans, presents a newly surfaced reel as possible rehearsal footage connected to the famous Patterson-Gimlin film. The film argues that the material points to a hoax, but the reel’s authenticity, provenance and significance have not been independently established in the sources available here. SXSW’s listing describes the documentary’s premise; it does not verify the new reel or settle the dispute.

Was the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film a hoax?

The new clip has prompted a renewed hoax claim, not a settled verdict. Capturing Bigfoot presents a roughly 40-second reel as practice or rehearsal footage linked to the 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film. An October 11, 2026 report describes the reel and the interpretations offered by people connected to the documentary, but the material has not been independently authenticated in the sources reviewed here. That distinction matters: a claim made in a documentary, even by people with ties to the story, is not the same as independently verified proof.

The original footage is associated with Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin and is conventionally dated to October 20, 1967. It depicts an ape-like figure walking in Northern California woods. SXSW describes it as one of the most analyzed and debated pieces of footage in its promotional listing. SXSW’s description of the film provides that context, but does not determine whether the figure was a person in a costume or an unidentified animal.

What is the new ‘rehearsal’ clip?

The October 11 report says the approximately 40-second reel was found in a safe and shows an ape-like figure moving through a forest. It reports that filmmaker Marq Evans received the material from Teresa Brooks, and that Greg Long characterized it as practice footage. The same report mentions matching camera and film-stock markings and accounts from several people featured in the documentary. Those are details reported in connection with the film, not technical findings independently confirmed by SXSW’s festival material. The October 11 report is the source for those descriptions and attributed comments.

Similarity between two clips can make a rehearsal interpretation plausible, but similarity alone does not establish who filmed either reel, when it was made, whether it depicts the same performer or event, or how the new footage reached the filmmaker. The available material does not establish a verified chain of custody or independently document the technical comparison. Without those pieces, the clip may be significant evidence to examine, but it cannot by itself close the case.

What does the documentary argue—and what remains unproven?

The film’s central premise is a reel of 16mm footage reportedly kept in a safe for more than 50 years, considered alongside interviews with people connected to the Patterson-Gimlin story. SXSW’s official listing confirms that framing and names participants including Clint Patterson, Bob Gimlin, Bob Heironimus, Larry Lund, Greg Long, Teresa Brooks and Jeff Meldrum. It does not certify the reel’s history or endorse a conclusion about the 1967 film. The SXSW listing is useful for the documentary’s confirmed premise and participant list.

The October 11 report attributes strong reactions to participants: Long calls the new footage practice; investigator Larry Lund says it is rehearsed and faked; and Clint Patterson, Roger Patterson’s son, says it means his father lied to him. These statements help show how the documentary frames the discovery, but they are testimony and interpretation—not independent corroboration of the reel’s provenance or contents. The report also attributes statements to people involved in the story; they should be understood as reported comments rather than a substitute for an independently examined film record.

How should the two reels be assessed?

The key questions are not only whether the images look alike, but whether the new reel can be reliably tied to the people, date and equipment claimed for it. The available accounts do not provide enough independently verified detail to resolve these questions or score the evidence.

  • Polish Release, cover may contain Polish text/markings. The disk DOES NOT have English audio and subtitles.
Question What is reported or established here What remains unresolved
Provenance and custody The October 11 report says the reel was found in a safe and that Teresa Brooks gave it to Marq Evans. An independently documented chain of custody, including when and by whom it was stored, is not established.
Date and equipment The report mentions matching camera and film-stock markings. The underlying technical examination and its independent verification are not detailed in the official festival listings.
Visual similarity Greg Long is quoted in the report as saying the new clip is uncannily like the 1967 film and is practice. A visual resemblance does not alone prove the same performer, production or event.
Independent examination The documentary features people connected to the case and presents their accounts. The sources here do not establish an independent authentication of the new reel or a conclusive finding about the original film.

Greg Long’s book The Making of Bigfoot is mentioned in the report as related background reading. The report does not establish an edition or current availability, and the book should not be treated as verification of this newly reported reel.
