No—not as a requirement, and a custom thumbnail cannot guarantee more clicks. It is a useful piece of packaging to test: YouTube says thumbnails and titles help viewers decide whether to watch and recommends custom thumbnails. To judge whether yours is helping an always-on stream, compare impressions click-through rate (CTR) with views, average view duration, and traffic sources in YouTube Studio.
What a thumbnail can—and cannot—tell you
YouTube defines live impressions CTR as how often viewers watched after seeing a registered thumbnail impression. It is a signal of how appealing the thumbnail, title, and stream content are together—not a measure of the thumbnail alone. A higher CTR therefore does not prove that the image caused more clicks, and it does not show by itself whether those viewers stayed.
YouTube reports that half of all channels and videos have an impressions CTR between 2% and 10%. That is broad context, not a target or prediction for your stream. CTR varies with the content, audience, and surface where an impression appears; compare your stream over time and against comparable conditions rather than treating the range as a pass/fail threshold.
YouTube also says 90% of its best-performing videos have custom thumbnails. The reviewed guidance does not state the year or the underlying sample and method, and the statistic does not establish that custom thumbnails cause higher CTR. It supports treating a custom image as a sensible option, not as a promise of a lift.

How to tell whether your thumbnail is helping
Establish a baseline
- In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, go to the Content tab, and use the Live filter to review live-stream performance.
- Record impressions, impressions CTR, views, average view duration, and traffic sources over a meaningful period. Include where viewers found the stream, such as Home or Suggested, Search, and subscriber traffic where reported.
Change one thing, then compare fairly
- Update the thumbnail while keeping the title and other packaging stable where practical. This is a measurement approach, not a claim that YouTube offers a controlled experiment for a continuous stream.
- Compare equivalent time windows and similar traffic mixes. A shift in who sees the stream or where it appears can change CTR independently of the image.
- Do not draw a conclusion from very little exposure or a small fluctuation. YouTube cautions against overreading limited data.
Read the whole viewing funnel
Consider CTR alongside impressions, views, and average view duration. A stronger CTR with disappointing viewing duration may mean the thumbnail or title creates an expectation the stream does not meet. YouTube warns that clickbait can lead to low average view duration, which may make a video less likely to be recommended. Keep a thumbnail when the combined evidence is useful: CTR improves against a comparable baseline and viewing duration remains healthy.
Studio’s registered thumbnail impressions do not include encounters on external websites and apps. If an embed or off-platform promotion is important to your audience, Studio CTR does not describe every time someone encountered the stream.

Make a custom thumbnail that fits an always-on stream
- Represent the actual stream clearly. A viewer should not have to guess whether it is a documentary, a topic-specific loop, or something else.
- Keep the design simple and legible at small sizes. YouTube recommends simple thumbnail designs; make the main subject or idea easy to recognize.
- Keep the image and title aligned with what viewers will encounter. Packaging that attracts the wrong audience can produce clicks without sustained viewing.
- Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines for the image.
You do not need a particular paid design app, camera, lighting setup, or drawing tablet to use a custom thumbnail; those are not requirements established by YouTube’s guidance.
Upload the image in YouTube Studio
- Verify the account if it is not already verified. YouTube requires account verification to use the custom-thumbnail feature.
- Prepare an image in a 16:9 aspect ratio, which YouTube recommends for video thumbnails.
- In YouTube Studio, open the stream’s details and use the thumbnail upload control to add the image, then save the change. YouTube’s exact labels and eligibility limits can vary by country or region and channel history, so follow the options shown in your account.
