These five documentaries offer different ways into the Gaza war: personal testimony across a year, family-centered investigation, videos made by people in Gaza, open-source analysis of one military operation, and interviews with Israeli military insiders. None is a complete record of the war. To choose what to watch—and how to assess its claims—look at whose accounts are included, what evidence the film uses, what it leaves outside its scope, and who is making each claim.

How these films differ

The films are not a ranked list, and they do not all attempt the same kind of reporting. Some center individual experience; others investigate a specific event or subject. The table is a quick guide to their focus. The sections below explain their methods, limits, and reported viewing routes.

Film Primary focus Approach
A Year of War: Israelis and Palestinians (2024) People in Gaza and Israel across the year after October 7 Longitudinal reporting and personal accounts
The Night Won’t End (2024) Three families and the human cost of war Investigative journalism and on-the-ground storytelling
One Day in Gaza (2024) Ordinary moments experienced amid danger and bombardment Videos recorded by ten people in Gaza
Nuseirat 274: The Hostage Massacre (2025) The June 2024 Nuseirat operation Open-source, geospatial and field-based investigation
NAZA (2026) Israeli military targeting systems and civilian harm Anonymous interviews with military insiders

That range is more useful than a simple “best” ranking. A viewer looking for testimony from people in both Israel and Gaza is asking a different question from someone trying to understand one military operation, or the systems used to select targets. A film’s subject and evidence method should therefore be part of the choice, alongside its reputation or awards.

Films centered on personal accounts and daily life

A Year of War: Israelis and Palestinians (FRONTLINE, 2024)

FRONTLINE describes this 90-minute film as following people in Gaza and Israel through personal accounts of the October 7 attacks and the year of war that followed. Its extended timeframe and individual testimony make it a useful starting point for viewers seeking human stories across Israeli and Palestinian lives, rather than a film limited to one operation or one day.

Filmmaker Daniel Barnwell said he wanted to “give a compassionate insight into both sides’ agonies.” That is his stated intention, not an independent measure of how balanced viewers will find the film. A documentary’s selection of people, testimony and context shapes its perspective even when it aims to present more than one community’s experience. The film’s year-long framing can help viewers connect individual accounts to developments over time, but it is still a selection of lives and moments—not a complete chronology or a representative sample of everyone affected.

FRONTLINE’s October 2024 release announcement listed the film on its website, the PBS app, FRONTLINE’s YouTube channel and PBS stations, and said it would be available on PBS Documentaries on Prime Video beginning October 15, 2024. Those are historical launch routes, not confirmation that the film remains available on each service or in every country. Check the title directly in the relevant service and territory.

One Day in Gaza (Al Jazeera English Digital / Close Up, 2024)

Al Jazeera describes this film as a compilation of videos recorded by ten individuals in Gaza. Rather than presenting a single reporter’s continuous account, it brings together participant-recorded material intended to show moments from ordinary people’s day amid danger and bombardment. That format can convey immediate, situated experience that a conventional interview-led film may not capture.

The format also defines the limits of what the film can establish. Ten contributors’ footage is not a comprehensive survey of daily life across Gaza, and participant recordings should not be treated as an independently verified account of every event shown. Al Jazeera reported that the film received a Peabody Award in 2025; the network announced that recognition on May 1, 2025. The award is useful context about the film’s reception, not a substitute for assessing any particular claim or image.

When watching contributor-recorded footage, it helps to distinguish what the camera directly shows from what a narrator, caption or contributor says it means. A recording is evidence of what appears within its frame, from a particular position and moment; by itself, it may not establish everything that happened before or after. This is not a reason to dismiss the footage. It is a way to read the format accurately and avoid asking a collection of situated recordings to answer questions it was not designed to answer.

Investigations focused on families and a military operation

The Night Won’t End (Al Jazeera English Fault Lines, 2024)

Al Jazeera Media Network says this investigation follows three families and examines the human cost of war, including bombing, unsafe “safe zones,” and alleged arbitrary executions. Its family-centered structure makes it a choice for viewers interested in how conflict and military decisions affect particular households, rather than a broad chronology of the entire war.

  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Keep the attribution visible: the film’s descriptions of events and its framing of alleged abuses are the publisher’s account. Al Jazeera reported that the film received a Peabody Award in 2025. Fault Lines executive producer Laila Al-Arian said in the network’s May 1, 2025 announcement: “No single piece can fully capture the scale of the atrocities in Gaza, but we aimed through investigative journalism and on the ground storytelling to offer a glimpse of what life has been like.” Her observation is a useful reminder of the limits of any one film, including this one.

The three-family focus offers depth through particular experiences, not a numerical portrait of all families or a complete account of every part of the conflict. Viewers can note which claims come from a family’s testimony, which are supported by the film’s reporting, and where the film uses language such as “alleged.” The distinction matters: a publisher’s description tells readers what the film sets out to investigate, while an individual finding still needs to be considered in light of the evidence the film presents.

Nuseirat 274: The Hostage Massacre (Al Jazeera 360, 2025)

This film examines Israel’s June 2024 operation in Nuseirat, an operation undertaken to rescue hostages. Al Jazeera says its investigation uses open-source data, field testimony, previously unseen images, satellite imagery, aerial navigation data and movement analysis. The combination aims to reconstruct a specific event through multiple types of material rather than relying only on interviews.

In its July 2025 release, Al Jazeera reported that 274 Palestinians were killed and 814 injured in one day. It argued that its analysis contradicted the Israeli military’s characterization of the operation as a successful hostage rescue. Both the figures and the film’s conclusions should be attributed to Al Jazeera; they are the network’s reported findings, not independently established figures in this guide. The rescue context matters when considering the dispute: the film scrutinizes the operation’s consequences and characterization, while the Israeli military’s account of the operation is a distinct position.

The methods named by Al Jazeera can answer different questions. Satellite imagery can help establish spatial context; movement analysis and aerial navigation data can contribute to reconstructing activity; field testimony and images can add accounts from people and places connected to the event. The existence of several evidence types does not make every conclusion self-explanatory. A careful viewer can ask how a sequence was reconstructed, what the film says each source establishes, and which steps in its reasoning are interpretation rather than direct observation.

Al Jazeera announced that the film would be available with English subtitles and unrestricted viewing on Al Jazeera 360 from July 3, 2025. That announcement does not establish present availability. Check the service and subtitle options where you plan to watch.

A film about military targeting claims

NAZA (Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, 2026)

According to the Associated Press in October 2026, NAZA opened in U.S. theaters after premiering at Venice. AP describes it as a film built around interviews with Israeli military insiders, filmed anonymously, about targeting systems and civilian harm. AP reported that its underlying reporting drew on more than 100 confidential sources gathered between 2023 and 2025 in collaboration with The Guardian’s investigation desk.

The Israeli military categorically denied the filmmakers’ findings, AP reported, and offered its own account of targeting decisions and precautions to limit civilian harm. The film’s allegations and the military’s denial are competing attributed positions; neither should be silently converted into an uncontested conclusion. Viewers assessing claims about targeting can distinguish what the film alleges, what evidence it presents, what the military says in response, and what remains unresolved in the reporting available to them.

Anonymous sourcing can be important in reporting about sensitive military processes, but it also means viewers cannot independently assess a source’s identity from the film alone. The AP account provides additional context about the reporting: more than 100 confidential sources were gathered over a period between 2023 and 2025 with The Guardian’s investigation desk. That scale and time span describe the reporting process; they do not, on their own, settle the accuracy of every claim. The military’s denial is also part of the record and should be read alongside the film’s evidence rather than omitted from a summary.

AP said a free stream on The Guardian’s website was planned for late November 2026. As of October 13, 2026, that date is still in the future, so the planned stream is not yet a confirmed viewing option. Check for an updated release notice before relying on it. The U.S. theatrical opening reported by AP does not establish availability in other territories.

How to compare a documentary’s claims

Different formats can illuminate different parts of the war, but no format removes the need to ask how a film knows what it says. Use these checks while watching:

  • Identify whose experience is foregrounded. The films here center, respectively, people in Gaza and Israel, three families, ten video contributors, survivors and open-source material around one operation, or anonymous Israeli military insiders. Ask whose testimony or evidence is absent from the film’s chosen scope.
  • Separate evidence from framing. An interview is testimony; a video is a recording made from a particular position; satellite imagery and movement analysis are forms of geospatial evidence; and a publisher’s description is its characterization of its own film. These are not interchangeable forms of proof.
  • Keep the scope in view. A year-in-review, a family-centered investigation, a collection of daily footage, a single-operation reconstruction and a film about targeting systems answer different questions. Do not use one of them as a stand-in for a comprehensive history of the war.
  • Attribute disputed claims. Note whether a number or conclusion comes from the filmmaker, the publisher, an interviewee, an official response or independent reporting. For a contested finding, look for the response as well as the allegation.
  • Check publication dates and access separately. An award announcement, release announcement or future streaming plan establishes what was reported at that time. It does not guarantee that a title is currently available, in your region, or with the language options you need.

A practical way to take notes is to record three things for any consequential claim: who is making it, what material the film shows or cites, and whether a response or dispute is included. That small habit helps keep a vivid personal account, a publisher’s summary and a geospatial reconstruction in their proper evidentiary categories. It also prevents an award, a large source count or a filmmaker’s stated intention from being mistaken for a blanket guarantee of accuracy or neutrality.

There is no comparative accuracy score or ranking established by the research behind this guide. Nor is there a comprehensive, independently maintained catalogue that would make these five titles a definitive list. Treat them as a set of distinct entry points, not as the only important documentaries or as a measured ranking of the “best.”

Where to watch and what availability claims mean

Availability is the least durable detail in a film guide. The viewing information documented for these titles includes historical launch announcements and one future plan, rather than a confirmed, territory-by-territory catalogue checked on October 13, 2026. The research for this guide was checked on October 8, 2026; release plans and platform catalogues can change even within a short interval.

  • A Year of War: FRONTLINE’s October 2024 release named its website, PBS app, FRONTLINE’s YouTube channel, PBS stations and PBS Documentaries on Prime Video as launch routes.
  • Nuseirat 274: Al Jazeera announced English-subtitled, unrestricted viewing on Al Jazeera 360 beginning July 3, 2025.
  • NAZA: AP reported a U.S. theatrical opening in October 2026 and a planned free Guardian website stream for late November 2026.
  • The Night Won’t End and One Day in Gaza: the cited Al Jazeera announcement documents their descriptions and 2025 Peabody recognition, but does not establish a current viewing route here.

Before choosing a title, search the film’s exact name on the publisher’s current platform and confirm that it plays in your country. For films where subtitles or language matter, verify the available version on the playback page rather than assuming an earlier announcement reflects current options. If you find only an old release announcement, treat it as a clue to a possible route, not proof that the film is still accessible there.

Choosing a starting point

For a broad human view spanning the year after October 7, begin with A Year of War: Israelis and Palestinians. For family-centered investigative reporting, choose The Night Won’t End. For footage recorded by people living through daily danger, try One Day in Gaza, while keeping its participant-based scope in mind. If your question is specifically about the Nuseirat operation, Nuseirat 274 offers an open-source and geospatial investigation whose findings Al Jazeera disputes with the Israeli military’s account. For reporting on targeting systems and civilian harm based on insider interviews, NAZA addresses that subject, with its conclusions denied by the military according to AP.

Watching more than one of these can broaden the kinds of evidence and experiences a viewer encounters. It still cannot make a small group of films a complete record of the war; each title remains bounded by its subjects, methods, access and editorial choices. If you want to compare perspectives, compare the films’ methods and stated scope rather than assuming that two contrasting titles automatically create a complete or mechanically balanced account.

Where can I watch Gaza war documentaries?

The documented routes are historical or planned, not guarantees of current access. FRONTLINE’s 2024 announcement listed its site, the PBS app, its YouTube channel, PBS stations and PBS Documentaries on Prime Video for A Year of War. Al Jazeera announced English-subtitled viewing of Nuseirat 274 on Al Jazeera 360 beginning July 3, 2025. AP reported a U.S. theatrical opening for NAZA and a planned Guardian website stream for late November 2026. Check each publisher’s current platform and your territory before watching.

Which documentaries show Palestinian and Israeli perspectives?

A Year of War: Israelis and Palestinians follows people in Gaza and Israel through personal accounts of the October 7 attacks and the year after. Other films in this guide have narrower scopes: the Al Jazeera titles focus on people and families in Gaza or a specific operation, while NAZA centers anonymous Israeli military insiders. These different selections should not be treated as a complete or automatically balanced account.

Are the casualty figures in Nuseirat 274 independently verified here?

No. Al Jazeera’s July 2025 release reported 274 Palestinians killed and 814 injured in one day and described its conclusions about the operation. This guide attributes those figures and conclusions to Al Jazeera rather than presenting them as independently established findings.

Did NAZA’s findings go unchallenged?

No. The Associated Press reported in October 2026 that the Israeli military categorically denied the filmmakers’ findings and offered its own account of targeting decisions and civilian-harm precautions. The allegations and the denial should both be attributed.

Does a Peabody Award prove a film’s claims?

No. Al Jazeera reported that The Night Won’t End and One Day in Gaza received Peabody Awards in 2025, with the recognition announced May 1. That is context about reception, not a substitute for evaluating a specific claim, image or method.

The Bottom Line

These films are best approached as distinct, partial perspectives—not as a single definitive account or a ranked list. Choose by subject and evidence method, attribute disputed claims to their sources, and verify current availability in your region before planning to watch.
