Doctor Who ‘Lux’ Review: Hope Can Change the World

“Lux” pairs the Doctor and Belinda with a cartoon world that turns playful imagery into a darker conflict over light, danger and hope.

“Lux” turns a cartoon into both its most inviting visual idea and its most unsettling threat. The 2025 Doctor Who episode puts the Doctor and Belinda Chandra in a 1950s Miami adventure where playfulness and danger share the same bright frame. Its hope-centered reading works best not as a slogan, but as a question the story asks: what can the Doctor do when darkness is not merely an enemy to defeat, but a force that threatens to take his light?

What happens in “Lux”?

“Lux” premiered on 19 April 2025, according to the official episode listing, which names Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor and Anita Dobson as Mrs Flood. The story pairs the Doctor with Belinda Chandra and sends them back in time to Miami, as summarized in the official series retrospective. Engadget places the mystery in the context of the TARDIS refusing to land on 24 May 2025.

The premise quickly takes on a distinctive form: the characters encounter a cartoon world and Mr Ring-a-Ding, also known as Lux Imperator or the Lord of Light. Engadget’s review describes the antagonist as seeking light, including the Doctor’s regeneration energy. That is the reviewer’s characterization of the threat, and it points to what gives the episode more consequence than a purely whimsical detour: the danger reaches into the Doctor’s own life force.

Why make the danger a cartoon?

The cartoon imagery is not just decoration. It creates a visual mismatch between a world that looks playful and a conflict with serious stakes. That mismatch lets “Lux” move between comic energy and unease without abandoning its central conceit; a cartoon can be funny, but it can also make a threat feel uncanny precisely because ordinary rules no longer seem to apply.

Showrunner Russell T Davies described a season episode in which the Doctor becomes a cartoon as “fun,” but “also rather dark and strange” in an official interview. That season-level comment helps frame the contrast at work in “Lux,” but it should not be mistaken for a scene-by-scene explanation of this episode. The effect is clearest in the broad tension between the form’s exuberance and the threat described in the story’s coverage.

How does hope fit the episode?

Hope is a useful lens for “Lux” because the episode makes light more than a visual motif: in Engadget’s account, it is something the antagonist seeks and the Doctor must protect. The title’s phrase “Hope can change the world” should be read as an interpretation of that conflict, not as a verified line of dialogue. The official episode page instead promotes the story with the question, “Can The Doctor uncover Lux’s power?”

The hope-centered reading is strongest when it stays grounded in the episode’s dramatic setup. A bright cartoon world does not make the danger disappear; it gives the danger a form that can be confronted. The Doctor’s work, then, is not simply to restore a pleasant surface, but to face what is trying to consume the light beneath it. That contrast allows the episode to be visually buoyant while still treating the stakes as real.

What does the episode say about representation?

Engadget reads the episode’s imagery and conflict through the Doctor’s experience as a person of color. That is a critical interpretation rather than an official synopsis, and it is worth treating as a question the episode invites rather than an automatic conclusion. A persuasive reading of representation should rest on what the story specifically shows about who is threatened, how the threat operates, and what the Doctor’s position means within that conflict.

That lens can deepen the discussion of “Lux” without replacing its more immediate story: a Doctor and companion confronting a force tied to light in a cartoon world. It also puts pressure on the hope framing. Hope matters most when the episode makes the danger and the characters’ unequal relationship to it legible, rather than using optimism to smooth over conflict.

Does “Lux” work as a Doctor Who episode?

Its clearest strength is the unity between premise and visual language: the cartoon antagonist, the cartoon world, and the darker threat all belong to the same imaginative choice. The episode can be playful without making its danger weightless. Its main interpretive challenge is that a striking visual metaphor can carry several meanings at once; viewers may find the representation reading resonant or may want more specific dramatic evidence to support it.

The production context reinforces the episode’s unusual approach. In an official interview published on 16 April 2025, the production identified “Lux” as Amanda Brotchie’s Doctor Who directorial debut and discussed Alan Cumming’s role in bringing Mr Ring-a-Ding to life. That behind-the-scenes framing underscores how central the character’s performance and presentation are to the episode’s identity.
