Nicola Coughlan gives Joy to the World its center of gravity. As Joy Almondo, a lonely hotel guest drawn into the Doctor’s orbit, she brings the special a warmth and steadiness that help its festive emotion land—even when the time-travel plot starts to feel more intricate than clear.
What is Joy to the World about?
First broadcast on 25 December 2024, Joy to the World is the Doctor Who Christmas special written by Steven Moffat and directed by Alex Sanjiv Pillai. Its setup pairs the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, with Joy Almondo, played by Nicola Coughlan: a cheerful but lonely hotel guest whose encounter with a mysterious briefcase opens a path to the Time Hotel. The official summaries promise danger, dinosaurs and a deadly plan, but the story’s most compelling question is more personal: what does connection mean to someone spending the holiday alone?
That focus gives the episode a more intimate starting point than its science-fiction machinery might suggest. The hotel conceit offers a playful route into time-travel spectacle, while Joy’s circumstances give the Doctor a reason to pause and attend to one person rather than simply race toward the next threat.
Why Nicola Coughlan is the episode’s star
Coughlan makes Joy’s cheerfulness feel like a choice rather than a fixed personality trait. She can be funny and open without erasing the loneliness beneath those qualities. That balance matters: Joy is not merely a bright guest brought in to decorate a holiday adventure, but a character whose emotional reserve gives the special something to discover.

Gatwa meets her with an appealing mix of energy and attention. His Doctor can make a scene feel exuberant, but the chemistry works best when he gives Coughlan room to set the emotional pace. Their exchanges supply the episode’s human scale. The Doctor’s larger-than-life presence does not overwhelm Joy; instead, their pairing turns the adventure into a story about being seen.
The supporting cast includes Joel Fry as Trev Simpkins and Steph de Whalley as Anita Benn, with Jonathan Aris, Julia Watson and Peter Benedict also credited. The episode’s defining relationship, however, is the one between its two leads.

Does the time-travel plot support the performances?
At its best, the Time Hotel is an elegant engine for the episode: it makes the scale of Doctor Who feel immediate, gives the special room for visual surprise, and places Joy in a world that can be both wondrous and dangerous. The premise is strong enough to carry festive spectacle without losing sight of the character story.
The trade-off is clarity. Moffat’s plotting likes to move quickly among rules, surprises and reversals; here, that density can make the mechanics harder to follow than the emotional throughline. When the plot is clicking, its twists amplify the sense that Joy has been swept into something extraordinary. When it is not, the characters’ feelings are easier to grasp than the exact workings of the latest complication. The episode is most satisfying when it lets the spectacle serve the relationship rather than compete with it.

Is it a satisfying Christmas special?
Its festive quality comes less from seasonal decoration than from its attention to loneliness, kindness and the possibility of company. That gives the episode an emotional warmth that feels earned by Joy’s characterization, not simply imposed by the calendar. The high-concept adventure and the quieter character beats do not always mesh seamlessly, but Coughlan’s performance helps bridge the gap.
The critical reception snapshot was mixed rather than uniform: Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 82% Tomatometer from 22 critic reviews and a 37% Popcornmeter from more than 250 audience ratings when checked on 4 October 2026. Those figures can change and measure different groups; they are context, not a verdict on the episode. The range is also visible in the excerpts displayed there: Michael Hogan of the Daily Telegraph offered a festive 4/5 assessment, while Emmet Asher-Perrin of Reactor criticized the plot mechanics. Caroline Siede of Episodic Medium, in a review published 28 January 2025, described the episode as packing in Moffat’s writing’s “high highs and low lows”; her excerpt calls it 55 minutes, while Disney+ lists a 56-minute runtime.

Spoilers: the story’s emotional payoff
Spoiler warning: this section discusses major developments and the ending.
Once the story’s central revelations come into focus, the hotel’s time-bending premise becomes more than a sequence of clever obstacles: it gives Joy’s loneliness and her connection to the Doctor a place within the episode’s larger design. The ending aims to bring its science-fiction ideas and its emotional story together, making the question of who reaches out—and who is remembered—matter as much as the mechanics of the plan.
That payoff works most strongly as a culmination of the lead performances. The plot may invite viewers to stop and untangle its rules, but the feeling it leaves behind is comparatively direct: Joy’s story is about being more than a passerby in someone else’s adventure. The resolution earns its warmth through the attention Coughlan and Gatwa have given that connection, even if the route there is not always as clean as the destination.
