“Boom” turns one wrong step into an episode-long pressure chamber: the Doctor is stranded on a landmine in the middle of a war, unable to move while Ruby and others face the widening danger. Steven Moffat’s story makes that simple physical constraint carry both its suspense and its larger argument about profit-driven conflict.
What happens in “Boom”?
In Season 1, Episode 3, the Doctor steps on a landmine on Kastarion 3, a planet caught in a devastating war. The official premise asks whether he can save himself, Ruby Sunday and the planet without moving. The episode premiered on 18 May 2024. Doctor Who’s episode page gives the setup its sharpest shorthand: “One wrong move, and….”
The situation is a strong fit for a contained science-fiction thriller. The Doctor’s inability to move limits the usual action-hero solution, while the threat grows beyond the explosive device beneath him. Ruby is not merely watching from the sidelines: her choices matter to the immediate effort to survive.
How well does the landmine premise sustain tension?
The central restriction gives the episode a clear dramatic engine. Every decision is measured against the possibility of triggering the mine, and the Doctor has to think and communicate rather than simply run toward the next danger. That sustained constraint keeps the crisis legible even as its stakes expand from one person’s survival to the fate of the planet.
#1 Best Overall
Daniel Cooper’s spoiler-marked Engadget review praises the tension built around the setup. He also finds the pacing uneven: after the buildup, the ending seems to arrive too quickly. That is one critic’s judgment, but it identifies the episode’s main trade-off—the pressure is effective, while the payoff may feel compressed.
What is the episode saying about war and profit?
“Boom” connects its survival story to a war sustained by a weapons corporation’s profit model. The conflict is not just a distant backdrop: it shapes the conditions that make lives disposable and the Doctor’s predicament part of a much larger emergency.

Cooper reads the episode as a critique of the way money, power and cruelty can make people inhuman. The strongest thematic link is the contrast between the immediate, individual cost of violence and the system that benefits from keeping the conflict going. The idea gives the thriller more to chew on than the mechanics of avoiding an explosion, though the concentrated premise leaves limited room to explore every supporting character in depth.
Who made “Boom,” and who is in the cast?
Steven Moffat wrote “Boom,” and Julie Anne Robinson directed it. Ncuti Gatwa plays the Doctor and Millie Gibson plays Ruby Sunday. The official cast list also credits Joe Anderson, Majid Mehdizadeh-Valoujerdy, Caoilinn Springall, Varada Sethu, Bhav Joshi and Susan Twist. The ensemble supplies the people caught up in the battlefield crisis, although Cooper’s review argues that the supporting roles receive less room than the Doctor and Ruby.
